Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 06 December, 2006 02:07

Today there was a great news for Flash Lite developers. Adobe released to developers the Flash Lite 2.1 player. So if you have one of the following phones you will be able to run standalone Flash Lite content:

  • Nokia S60 3rd edition: E50, E60, E61, E62, E70, N71, N72, N73, N75, N80, N91, N92, N93, 3250, 5500, 5500 sport
  • Nokia S60 2nd edition, feature pack 3: N70, N90
  • Nokia S60 2nd edition, feature pack 2: 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682
Flash Lite 2.1

Now a couple of tips:
  1. If you have a Nokia 2nd edition and you have already a Flash Lite player installed, before installing the Flash Lite 2.1 player, uninstall the Flash Lite player and then install the 2.1 player.
  2. If you are installing the Flash Lite 2.1 player on Nokia 3rd Edition phones, you can go head and install it without problems. In any case you need to understand a couple of things.
    1. The Flash Lite 2.1 player can run only standalone Flash Lite content. So it will not replace the Flash Lite 1.1 player that these phones have embedded, but rather install in parallel. So for example the Flash Lite 1.1 player will still be available and you will still be able to view Flash Lite 1.1 content in the WAP browser.
    2. How to run Flash Lite 2.x content. When you install the Flash Lite 2.1 player, you will have a new icon named "Flash". If you click on it, it will start the Flash Lite 2.1 player. Now you can run Flash Lite content developed for 2.x and 1.x. So put the content in the Others folder. These content will be visible to both player. If you try to run Flash Lite 2.x content within the Flash Lite 1.1 player you will get an error.
Hope it was clear, in any case if someone has a question please let me know.

biskero Ciao

if you mean, browsing the file ssytem that's not possible. The only directories available to browse with the FL player are under Others, in which you can create directories too and are accessible to the FL player.

Ciao Alessandro,
I've read carefully your blog and other info regarding FLash Lite 2.1
I am wondering if you have any information on the future release of Flash Lite that will support eventually the Flash protocol RTMP and the communication with a Flash Media Server. Moreover I'm interested in the capability to manage the embedded camera (camera.get will work in the future on mobile devices)?
As you have understood my interest id using Flash to develop Person2Person communication.

Ciao

Mauro

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 12/09/2007, 15:03

biskero Ciao Mauro,

there are no definite information about RTMP, but Flash Lite 3 will support FLV. Also there was a recent announcement about Flash Media Server supporting Flash Video streaming for Flash Lite 3.

In any case we will know more at the Adobe MAX conference in 2 weeks, and will post more infos on my blog.

About the camera, I am not sure. I see it difficult to integrate since it will require a lot of integration for the various OEM. Did you take a look at the Kuneri tool kit?

Also join the Boston user group www.flashmobilegroup.org, we discuss these kind on things in the mailing list.

Ciao,
Alessandro

Hi,

I want to know how can i use Flash Lite screen savers and wallpapers in N70.

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 02/08/2007, 14:20

biskero Ciao Bilal,

you cannot use FL content as screensaver or wallpaper on the N70. These capabilities are available only if the FL player is embedded into the OS.

Dear Sir,

I downloaded flash player 2.1 into my Nokia N80 phone and removed the 1.1 version. So I can't anymore be able to view Flash Lite 1.1 content in the WAP browser. I thought version 2.1 would do. WOuld appreciate sending to me flash lite 1.1 in .sis flie to be able to download it again to my phone since nokia service shop does not have this feature alone.

Thank u in advance,

Rabih

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 01/05/2007, 23:35

biskero Ciao Rabih,

first, the Flash Lite 2.1 can be installed with the Flash Lite 1.1 player, they do not conflic.
Second, how did you remove the Flash Lite 1.1 player? It's integrated into the OS so there is no way you could remove it.

Also there is no Flash Lite 1.1 player available for download. If nothing is working I suggest you to update your phone firmware.

hi i just got the n95 n was wantin flashlite 2.1 because only 1.1 coes with the fhone but when download it isays unable to install component is built in n dont no how to uninstall it any ideas? cheers

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 03/06/2007, 01:49

biskero Ciao David,

yes got the same issue with my Nokia N95. I think the Flash Lite 2.1 and the Flash Lite 2 that is in the phone use the same id and so it cannot be replace. Also because you cannot overwrite or remove the Flash Lite 2.0 on the phone since it's part of the operating system.

So I think there is no solution at the moment. Will ask around though.

Hi Alessandro, thanks for your constant support.
I have a problem on a Flash Launcher Application.
This not woks on FL2.1 on my Nokia6680.
I think this is linked to some MIME recognition problems in the FL2.1, like is reported in the post:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=68&catid=472&threadid=1220404&enterthread=y

You have some workaround to this problem?

thanks

fusioneer | 06/03/2007, 14:57

Hi Alessandro

Are there any developments for a solution to launch a Flash 2.1 application with a symbian wrapper and icon?

I went to www.flashmobilegroup.org but couldn't find any references to this.

I noticed you said you thought this problem could be solved can you let me know if you still think this as this is a real show stopper for me if I cannot get round this problem.

thanks

Pete

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 06/03/2007, 15:06

biskero Ciao Pete,

I know there will be soon a solution to this problem. Can't tell you much :)
In any case there is a tutorial on the Adobe site for creating a launcher for FL content with an icon on 3rd Ed. The only thing is that it will launch the embedded FL player of the phone and not the FL2.1.
Stay tuned on the site for more infos, probably this week.

john hill | 08/02/2007, 16:10

Hello Alessandro, thanks for the post - very useful. I paid for Flash Lite 2.0 when it came out and it seemed to work much better, let me explain. I could bluetooth flash content to my N70, open the message and flash would run the .swf. With 2.1, Flash does not open the .swf straight from the message folder. I open Flash 2.1 from the application itself but can't seem to get the .swf into a folder that flash can see. Any ideas?

Thanks

John

biskero Ciao John,

looks really cool! The idea is great I think!
The 3rd one not sure if it works on the phone since there is no mouse you need to use the joystick.

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 08/02/2007, 16:16

biskero Ciao John,

use PC Suite to pass the swf to the Others directory. Thne start the FL2.1 player and browse to the directory where is your swf. The Others directory is the FL player default directory.

Also would you like to join the Boston Adobe Mobile and Devices User Group? We have discussions and presentations, wwwflashmobilegroup.org

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

WorksDigital | 27/01/2007, 18:54

Hi Alessandro,

Thanks for the info as we have been struggling with FL 1 to achieve simple tasks.

We are developing some UI experience screens for a client on the N73 which has the FL 1 pre installed. I assume from your list that this is a S60 3rd edition phone? If so I tried to install the Adobe supplied flashlite2_1_symbian_s60V3.SIS file via the Nokia suite, the file looked like it had installed and at the end of the process an on screen message said to finish off install on device, looked at device and no prompts visable. Am I doing something wrong? is the more to do on the phone to finish the install?

FL 2 is certainly not present in the applications folder on the N73 as only the original still there. I did try to run a 2 file from the CDK but no luck as still the FL1 player.

Any advice or website pointers greatly appreciated.

Regards

Phil

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 28/01/2007, 18:07

biskero Ciao Phil,
yes the N73 is a 3rd edition Nokia.
When you use the PC Suite to install applications it will transfer the sis to the phone and you will get a prompt message on the phone to install the sis.

Another way to install, it to transfer the sis via bluetooth to the phone. The sis is located into the inbox of the phone. You can just click on it and go through the installation process.

I have a nokia mobile set , no is 6681. As flush player is not pre installed in that set. To run the flash file what I have to do.

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 19/12/2006, 15:13

biskero Ciao Joydip,

if I understand correctly you have a Nokia 6681 and you want to get the Flash Lite 2.1 player.
Is very simple, go to the Adobe site, you need to register and get the Flash Lite 2.1 player for Symbian 2nd edition
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/index.html?tab:downloads=1

Check the Nokia section where it says:

Players
* Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian (Dec. 4, 2006)

Let me know if you need help.

Hi,
I have Nokia 6681. I downloaded flash lite 2.1(flashlite2_1_symbian_s60V2_FP3.sis) from adobe and when I tried to install the .sis file, I got the following error message "Model of phone not supported. Installation cancelled". But in the applications folder I see a program called Flash Player, whose status is 'installed'. Moreover, I couldn't see any flash icon in the menu.. So I am confused.. Is there any way to get the previous version of flash lite player? or what should I do, to install flash lite 2.1 succesfully and view swf files on my phone(NOKIA 6681)?

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

mandalatv | 08/05/2007, 07:40

Make sure you're downloading FP2 for the 6680, 6681, and 6682. This had me hung up for awhile, but I finally figured out that Adobe accidentally linked the wrong SIS files. Try another link and make sure the file says "FP2". I reported the link to Adobe.com.

UbiquityGames | 24/01/2007, 20:53

Hi Alessandro,

Has anyone been using different folders than the "OTHERS" folder? Or is that pretty much standard for swf .sis files?

The "OTHERS" folder is very easily accessible by the end user. So it makes it very easy for them to copy content and share it. It would be nice to have that folder a little harder to get to like the standard nokia apps folders.

Cheers,
Evan

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 24/01/2007, 21:28

biskero Ciao

you can put the swf file in any accessible directory so that you can "hide" your swf from the user. Create an icon on the main menu that lauches the swf, check this article:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/devices/articles/s60_swf_launcher.html

Alessandro,

It's a pity, but your solution does not work on my Nokia N70. I've uninstalled all versions of player, installed 2.1 again, but I can see Flash icons inside of Flash Player only. Standard file-browser shows it as unknown file format.

BO_Frank | 08/12/2006, 09:36

Hi Allessandro,

thanks for your article. Do you know if there will be a plug in for the browser (the old one or the OSS), supporting FL 2.1 content? Since standalone does not fit for many purposes...

Cheers,
Frank

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

biskero | 08/12/2006, 14:19

biskero Ciao Frank,

I do not think there will be a release for the browser. As I explain the idea is to embed the FL player into the OS. This release is mainly for developers so that they can start developer using the 2.1 features. In any case the standalone player can be used to run pretty much all type of content.

The Nokia 3rd edition FP1 will have FL 2 in the S60 version 2 browser. The N95 should be the first one.

Alessandro

Re: Flash Lite 2.1 for Symbian How To

BO_Frank | 08/12/2006, 17:05

Thanks for the quick reply, Allessandro.

I thought it would be a way of getting FL content into my own application, since the FL 1.1 plug-in is protected by Nokia Vendor ID (so not accessible through Browser Control API). But seems I have to wait until there are enough devices out with FL 2.x embedded in OS. But I expect the numbers will grow fast.

Cheers,
Frank

I think if you do not have a previous Flash Lite player installed on your phone installing the FL2.1 will not help. So let me ask around and see what I can do. Can you send me an email? biskero at gmail
