Flash Lite 101, a new mobile technology

biskero | 27 September, 2006 04:18

I am a Flash Lite developer and I would like to introduce other developers to this new mobile technology.

Currently all Nokia 3rd Edition S60 and Series 40 have the Flash Lite 1.1 player embedded into the OS. There are some differences between the implementations on the two platforms.

For example the S60 3rd edtion currently can run Flash Lite 1.1 content in Standalone mode and inside the WAP browser. So you can run an application or a game in fullscreen mode or view it in the WAP browser as an embeded object.
On the other hand the Series 40 3rd edtion supports Flash Lite 1.1 content as Standalone, Wallpapers, Screensaver and Sub-LCD.

Soon Nokia will begin to ship S60 and Series 40 mobile phones with Flash Lite 2 embedded, which will help to create more complex content. If you are interested in the differences between Flash Lite 1.1 and Flash Lite 2 check here.

Also here are other resources:
You can visit my blog, biskero.org, where I blog daily on Flash Lite content. I have a list of tutorials and resources that will help to understand more this new mobile technology.
I am also the manager of the Boston Adobe Mobile and Devices User Group and if anyone is interested in joining please send us an email. The User Group is open to anyone interested in Flash for mobile devices, we organize online presenations from Flash Lite companies/developers around the world.

Great intro Alessandro!

What is nice about Flash Lite (especially version 2), is that the same content can be deployed on multiple platforms with little or no change. For example, applications or games can be targeted for S60, BREW, iRiver, Windows, Mac, Linux, in browser as well as standalone executables, and other embedded systems (such as Kodak EasyShare camera UI, Jaguar in-car screen, and many phone UI...etc.)

I think more developers should take a look at this technology to rapidly build and deploy their content.

biskero Ciao Dave,

yes, that's a great point. The challage now if to fit the different mobile phone's screen layouts. It seams that the attention will shift more on the UI/experience then the code itself.

Yes, dynamic layout for different screen resolution is possible; however, it may not be the most efficient way during runtime.

Another method is to decouple the UI/view with the logic/model, implemented by using a light weight version of the MVC framework, so the same content can be ported to different resolutions and platforms more easily.

Flash Lite 2 (and ActionScript 2) really helps in terms of developing such architectures.

biskero Ciao Anina,

yes I saw the video sometime ago, really great content.
Looking forward to see more fashion related Flash Lite content. One could be a Fashion Flickr type of app, since I saw you are posting a lot on "inside" pictures on your blog!!
