AUGUST 30th, 2007
CUC Communication University of China
[11:07:56 PM] Uli Weinberg says: No.1. East Street, Dingfuzhuang, Chaoyang District, 100024, Beijing

i have been invited to speek about 360Fashion and mobile video at the CUC in Beijing! their summer program is being lead by Ulli Weinberg from the HFF university in potsdamm, and this summer he is teaching about short film production. well, you don't get much shorter than a mobile video, and with all the power of the video editing capabilities in the s60 device, i will be pleased to present to the students my tricks and tips for mobile video making.

the mobile phone is a growing media channel, and in my opinion, creating a mobile movie with a HD camera, editing it in final cut pro, and then bringing it into the mobile device--is not the best way to go about it. granted, currently, muvee is the only application that allows you to overlay pre-programmed graphics in the mobile phone. however, i believe by looking towards the trends of the s60 platform (offering 3 different video editing propositions), you can not rule out the mobile as becoming the initiating device.

Chinese-German jury accepted 11 Projects for 2007 !

i realize now that currently the mobile video editing suite is not comparable to final cut pro, however i do believe that creative people can create with ANY device. by making experiments with the s60 tools, one can come up with some great surprises of DIGITAL COMBUSTION only available by using the specific device. i know what every phone can do and what video effect it will have from the 7650 to the 6630 to the 6680 to the n70 to the n93 and now to the n95. each device has a specific light meeter, a start time, a stop time, a video quality, and more that lead to different effects.

while everyone in the world is going from the TOP down, 360Fashion is going from the BOTTOM up. i guess it's all about perspective. maybe cuz i played with miniatures as a child, i think small, which as the devices progress, could lead to something big... ;D

slimpixi the 2 hour speech was a great success. many students had never known there was a video editor in the phone -- let alone three different ways to do it. they asked so many questions about quality vs speed, ease of use, connectivity, and more. i will post the video at the end with all their phones online. the CUC has asked me to come and teach a course about mobile video making because they saw the golden opportunity for their students to take advantage of their film making skills to participate in the growing mobile video making market.

challenges in china include the data plan rates: they are astronomical as the operators have not understood how flat rate data plans can help to support wide range adaptation of data services. all the students said they would never upload a video from their phones. i also discovered that no wifi phones exist or are sold by operators. the n95 for example has the wifi taken out.

apparently in hong kong it is very different: competitive data plans, wifi phones, and a more open attitude towards data services.

the main concern about mobile video making by the students was the quality.

i am very excited to come to teach a 4 week mobile video making course at the university.
