Symbian and smart monitoring of human motion

ahoccc | 18 August, 2006 10:52

With the release of Nokia 5500, there has been lot of discussion how to utilize the integrated motion sensor. This integrated sensor is excellent for certain type of applications but would it be better not just to monitor phone motion but the actual person muscle activity and other bio-signals?

You could have integrated sensors built in to your clothes (e.g. sports wear) that does not monitor only motion but also muscle activity and heart rate automatically. Sensor information can be collected directly to your mobile. With this kind of smart monitoring of human motion you can monitor your exercise, daily activities and fitness development very easily and accurately.

So, what do you need for this?

  • Mobile device (preferably, Symbian) with Bluetooth
  • Monitoring application
  • Clothing that has built in smart monitoring technology (e.g. Smart wear, active clothing)

Just put on smart wear, clothes similar to normal skin tight sport wear that has “built-in” sensors for muscle activity, motion and heart rate, and start monitoring with your Symbian device.

This would be ideal solution for personal wellbeing as well as for professional athletes to monitor their exercises. Even more, the results could be transferred using 3G network to the personal trainer or coach for further analysis.

Muscle activity monitoring with Symbian device and smart wear

Ok, do you think this sound like the future? No, these advanced solutions already exist but sadly are not very widely known like other professional healthcare/wellbeing related smart phone solutions. For example, a company called Mega Electronics Ltd (www.megaemg.com) is specialized in bio-signal monitoring devices and technology.

I think this is a really interesting area especially with obesity rising at alarming rates in the west. I have been planning to adapt some of my location based games to encourage activity by monitoring a players heart rate as part of the process. I came across this Bluetooth heart rate monitor a while ago (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4369) but have not had much luck in getting hold of some for creating the actual game.

ahoccc Paul,

That sounds great. You are thinking just the way I see it.

And think of following case:

Jus apply muscle activity monitoring using Bluetooth EMG sensor. Player has really to "use" the muscle to get e.g. car moving in the game, this is different than just sensing e.g. hand movement. You really have to use the muscle (contract and relax). So you are actually training your muscles without even noticing...

Same case for professional healthcare:

You have had some sort of accident or partial paralysis and you have to exercise your muscles to be able to use them properly again. It is very frustrating to try to exercise precise muscles by just doing some movement. When you apply your muscle exercises to visual game, so that you have to use specific muscle to do things in it... rest you can imagine. This kind of Neuro-rehabilitation is actually in use in professional healthcare applications in hospitals. However, all this could be applied to mobile devices as well.

There are not yet many bluetooth enabled medical devices around, but the number will rise eventually. In the meantime, we have to deal with second best option -> to use bluetooth adapters between serial cable enabled and infrared enabled devices. I have been involved in developing this kind of small-sized battery operated serial/IR to bluetooth adapter, the eLink. It has been used successfully with several medical devices and Symbian (glucometers, PEF-meters, blood analysers etc.). For more information about eLink Bluetooth adapter can be found at http://www.ehit.fi/index.jsp?pid=143.

Arto,

We are considering just such projects here. Can you tell me when a model like the 5500 Sport will be released to the US market? Do you know what the model number will be?

Best Regards,
Steve Raymond

Heart rate monitor

Arto,
Recently Nokia released N79 device with heart rate monitor capability. N79 device will talk to Polar heart rate monitor device and read the current heart rate. Can we capture this data by finding the Bluetooth profile and opening a Bluetooth serial port? Do we have API support to capture the data? I am planning to develop an application using this data. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Rag
