MIDP 3.0

balagopalks | 17 July, 2006 15:39

About more that an year ago, while reading the specs of MIDP 3.0 (JSR-271) a strong feeling came to my mind that it will of course be a promise to the mobile world to be in pace with utilizing of the power of the high end gadgets where it is implemented! Java Micro Edition is still growing and we could expect more in the upcoming days! For developers like me, it gave an impression that JME is in its limits, but have to realize that there is still a long way to go.

The key Features of MIDP 3.0 include

-> Enable and specify proper behavior for MIDlets on each of CLDC, CDC, and OSGi, for example:
o Enable multiple concurrent MIDlets in one VM
o Specify proper firewalling, runtime behaviors, and lifecycle management issues for MIDlets
   o Enable background MIDlets (e.g. UI-less)
o Enable auto-launched MIDlets (e.g. started at platform boot time)
   o Enable inter-MIDlet communications
-> Enable shared libraries for MIDlets
-> Tighten spec in all areas to improve cross-device interoperability
-> Increase functionality in all areas. E.g.
o Improve UI expressability and extensibility
o Better support for devices with larger displays
o Enable MIDlets to draw to secondary display(s)
o Enable richer and higher performance games
   o Secure RMS stores
   o Removable/remote RMS stores
   o IPv6
o Multiple network interfaces per device
-> Specify standard ways for doing MIDlet provisioning through other means (e.g. OMA (SyncML) DM/DS, Bluetooth, removable media, MMS, JSR-232, etc.)
-> Extensive device capabilities query
-> Localization & Internationalization (if appropriate, integrating/augmenting JSR-238 as needed)

A key design goal of MIDP 3.0 will be backward compatibility with MIDP 2 content.

I am looking forward for the announcement of first set of devices that do support JSR 271.

Gopal

hartti Don't hold your breath while waiting for the devices :-)

The spec has to be written first... The schedule stated on jcp.org Web site is way off. There has not been any public or early drafts published, and the planned schedule states that final approval ballot was planned to happen two months ago.

I have heard that they have garthered quite a lot of requirements for the spec, so the result can answer many developer requests. Have to wait for a bit still, though....

I tried to look for the presentation materials for the MIDP 3.0 session on JavaOne, but did not find it here http://developers.sun.com/learning/javaoneonline/. Maybe it was a BOF session and those slides are not to be published...

Hi Gopal,

I'm also interesting in the content of the MIDP 3 - JSR 271.
I can understand from your message that you having the access to the specs content.
If this is the case, I will be much appreciating if you can share me with the content of the spec or guide me how and where I can find them.

Many thanks in advance,
Yuval

Hi Gopal,

With regards to this:
o Enable auto-launched MIDlets (e.g. started at platform boot time)

Im 100% sure that Nokia's implementation will no support this. What to you think?

balagopalks Hi Dusan,

IMHO, we cannot comment about MIDP 3.0 device's behaviour at this time as there are no MIDP 3.0 devices available in the market.

Do you have any specific reason to say that Nokia's implementation wont support auto-launched MIDlets?

Regards
Gopal

Regardless of whatever the new features the MIDP 3.0 brings in, the device manufacturers need to make sure the existing devices can be upgraded to MIDP 3.0 standards once it comes out as a final version preferably by firmware update, since more than a billion devices have been sold till now and nobody can expect more than billion people to buy new phones just to upgrade to MIDP 3.0 standards.
