Will my dream come true?

balagopalks | 10 August, 2007 12:02

I was travelling on a bus and reading a book on Symbian C++. I just wanted to write a sample app using Camera and took my Phone. It was a phone very similar to E90 :-/  . Done the necessary coding using QWERTY keypad, compiled it and ran the application right on the phone.  Wanted to make some some modifications in the code to implement Video recording funtionality and upload to a Sever, Long pressed Menu key to switch the display back to IDE on my phone, done the neceassary coding, compiled it back again, run the application and was capturing a Video. eekss!! Suddenly the bus braked! I just stood up to see what happend - I was not in a bus :-/ , I can see my room, my Symbian C++ books beside me.. Where am I ??  That was a dream ?? I was just wondering - I woke up from my bed and still was unable to believe that I was on a dream! But I have to!!  It was about 6:45 am and have to get ready to go to office.

In my part of the country there is a belief that dreams that happen in early morning will come true - Will my dream come true ?

Gopal

I just found this one to compile C++ and Java with the phone: www.j2medit.com
Now we just need a sismaker !!!

Sorry Oscar but for compiling java or c++ with this J2medit you have to get an account with SteelByte company and this cost you from 4$ for a month to 2.60 $ per month for an annual contact :(
Compilation is only available online and not on standalone offline :( And I'm not sure they compile for Symbian C++ or J2ME (I can't have confirmation on their site ...)

antonypr I think your dream has become reality now. We can ask Jurgen Scheible for that.... :)

The answer is, of course, Python. You can edit your code using any text editor on your phone and run your app immediately.

@Jurgen: Are you reading this blog??? Say something about Python....

I remember the day where Windows programming was so difficult. It was around 15 years ago. You can imagine the level of difficulty of Windows programming at that time with the current S60 UI programming. Displaying a Hello World application takes hundred of lines.

There was a guy from Borland who had a dream about easy Windows programming. He worked with his team and Delphi was born a few years later. It was really a big revolution. Now people can write a Hello World Windows application in 1 line of code only.

I hope the history will repeat in S60 platform. :)

its not the technology barrier. We have got C++ on it, we have got C running on it. We can definetly make IDEs to develop code on phone itself. The main issue is usablity. Will you be able to type code with that cramped keyboard of your cellphone. Propbably not. May you can design the forms but real coding not until you get a real keyboard to do that stuff. That bluetooth one will work fine I guess.

hartti Gopal, looks like you have worked too much as the work comes to your dreams. The minute I start dreaming of coding, I'll go on vacation...

balagopalks Haha.. you are right, now for me its like "Symbian...Symbian... every where.... :-)
Me basically being a Java guy, learning Symbian C++ is more of my personal interest.

Hmmm....Going for a vacction in Switzerland is always in my dreams.....

kiran10182 Dear Gopal,

Sorry to say you that dreams that come at 4.00 AM in the morning may come true. But in your case you were too late. It was 6.45 AM !!! I have one solution for you. Schedule your dream for 4.00 AM tonight. ;)

Kiran.

Hi Balagopal..
I think your dream has already become reality by Nokia itself. Thanks to NRC and Jukka Luarila's Team. I am talking about the Python for series 60(PyS60). The dream which you saw I am already doing when I travel in bus or when free at my college. You just have install the python interpreter for pys60 then you can use the interactive console and write your application and run them on the phone itself. But it has not full functionality of every part of symbian but you can program at least 95% of the Nokia device. I use it frequently when i need show something to my students when i come out of class room after lecture and if they ask me something i will immediately bring my Nokia E65 out of the pocket and will start python and will write few lines of code and will demonstrate. Recently last week i was talking with my students about text to speech conversion in E65 i run python and write two lines of code to demonstrate them and then run the code, students were really impressed, they told Nokia will be the next major company for mobile computers with SIM. We have to add more values to it.

So, your Indian belief is true, dreams seen in morning are always TRUE... Nokia made it true. Connecting people- Creating dreams- making realities- giving better lives....!

balagopalks But Kiran Patel, I was travelling na, So the bus should have started before 4:00 AM ;) ....So still there is chance that my dream may come true and also you might have noticed from the replies from Antony, Kiran Trivedi and others that my dream is becoming a reality now... ;)

Thinking of coding even in ur dreams...............Come on man there are many things outside java, symbian ... to dream for...

About your dream the main positive thing is that You don't have to transfer the application to the phone. Nowadays most of the time is lost by loading it between the phone & the PC.
