Few weeks ago the FFII and other organizations launched a new campaign to stop software patents. Should you wish to participate please sign up here.
In case that terms like software patents and copyright sound analog to you, please follow these links:

If you're a software developer, ISV, etc. and want to know how this could affect you, just take a look at the following patents granted by the EPO (European Patent Office):
Generate different web page depending on detected device
Reduce page loading time by automatically reducing image quality

well i have read this on wiki i live in india and according to wiki.In India, a clause to include software patents was quashed by the Indian Parliament in April 2005.Your post was really good thanks. Its right that patents have better control over things rather than copyrights as i think

I agree. Software patents are ridiculous. Patents should only be given to concrete products with real value.
If you are looking for a site with lots of great patents available in PDF format, check out WikiPatents.com. It is perfect for research!

Thanks for bringing this up here David! The economics of the technology industry are tough enough as it is without a bigger chunk of everyone's budgets going to the lawyers.
Patents are very clearly the wrong thing for software. Copyright doesn't work very well but it's a lot better than a patent.
