New naming scheme for Nokia phones

tote_b5 | 19 September, 2006 11:44

At last! To be honest, I've been lost in the jungle of code numbers Nokia uses for their phones lately. Although I'm focusing only on Symbian, more precisely S60 phones, I was still confused which model knows what, what their basic characteristics are, etc. I've even misused these numbers for S40 and S60 phones (cardinal sin! :) and then was wondering why I was looked stupid by people.

Actually, I also wanted to write a posting about this topic, but now I'm late. Nevertheless, I'm so glad that people at Nokia have also noticed this problem and more importantly decided to solve it!

Good decision, can hardly wait for the new names!

At last!! That was my first thought too, until I read the ironic post from Mobile Opportunity
http://mobileopportunity.blogspot.com/2006/09/good-luck-naming-your-phones-nokia.html

Good move, I agree, but not without challenges :-)

tote_b5 Very good post from Mike, thank you for sharing it with us, Tommi! I agree with most of the points, however, I feel there must be some steps taken into this direction in order to bring order to chaos. It will be challenging, as you wrote, painful, as I think, but hopefully it's going to be worth it.

Hi Gabor,

The news of the death of Nokia four-digit-numbers, as the old saying goes, is a bit premature. The quote the reporter capture was correct, but the interpretation was somewhat off mark.

For those who haven't read the news article, here's the quote: "What you will see coming from us in the future is not just a numbering system, you are going to start to see names that carry a meaning and are important to consumers," Keith Pardy, head of marketing at Nokia, said during a webcast from an Citigroup's investor meeting in New York.

What Keith was referring to was the ADDITION of names to the Nokia product branding, NOT the elimination of numbers. We've already seen examples of this approach in products like the Nokia 5500 Sport. Nokia brand managers also hold out the possibility of using a combination of numbers and names in ways that communicate a product grouping with key differentiating features or price points: something like the Nokia 1234 Sport, Nokia 1234 Music, and Nokia 1234 Fashion, or the Nokia 4567 Steel, Nokia 4567 Gold, and Nokia 4567 Platinum.

I personally agree with the "Numbers are confusing" point of view, but I also know some people find exactly the opposite to the the case.

tote_b5 Kevin,

In fact, I think that most people might _not_ be confused by these numbers as they don't have to keep in mind _all_. It's just us, mobile geeks, who should keep all of them in mind in order to remember which model we're talking about. For example, my father had once bought a 6130 and when he was about to replace it with a newer model, then he didn't have to know anything about _all_ of the rest, but memorize another number.
