Free Tira Wireless' device database

hartti | 09 July, 2008 17:51

This is sort of old news, but I realized I have not written about this before... Tira Wirless has a free version of its modd mobile device database available on the net (there is also for-fee Standard and Enterprise Editions). The database covers quite a nice number of manufacturers and handsets (did not see any major player missing from there, that's for sure...)

You need to register to Tira Go Mobile Community to be able to access the database, which contains information about the devices as well as the Java implementations. The free version lists basic form factor information, Java API support and general Java VM stuff (JAR size, heap, RMS, performance index, etc.)

The for-fee standard edition adds many, many more bits of information: system properties, browser & WAP characteristics, protocol support, Java system event behavior, key codes and other detailed Java API information. It might be worthwhile for Java-developers to check this out...

Supernovas 7210 and 7610

hartti | 01 July, 2008 01:24

Last week Nokia announced four new Series 40 devices:

After Bill Perry from Adobe asked me about the details of the new 7210 and 7610 devices, I realized that our devices specs are missing that information. As I do not know exactly when that information is going to be inserted on our site (this week is a "holiday" week after all) I thought I need to chip in with some facts before also biskero starts harrassing me...

Both 7210 and 7610 are Series 40 5th Edition FP1 devices (which means that for Java specs, check the table in here) and they have Flash Lite 3.0. As I am not as used to dig out this information as a couple of my colleagues, I cannot guarantee the facts, but I am pretty sure I got this right.

Dr. Raento wins an award for best CS dissertation in 2007 in Finland

hartti | 31 May, 2008 04:05

Unless I am totally mistaken, one of our Forum Nokia Champions, Mika Raento, has just won the award for the best doctoral thesis/dissertation in computer science for 2007 in Finland from the Finnish Information Processing Association (strictly speaking, I guess the award is granted by a research foundation, which is part of FIPA). His dissertation was titled "Exploring privacy for ubiquitous computing: Tools, methods and experiments".

Here is a link to a news short in English and here a longer news article in Finnish.

Congrats, Mika!

Do discussions, wiki, blogs and lobby feel faster for you?

hartti | 29 May, 2008 21:08

They should. At least my browsing experience got much better a couple hours ago as we got a software update for the servers especially targeted for improving the performance of the services. (and yes, and there was some login issues yesterday on Forum Nokia platform in general which slowed things down even more)

Feel free to complain if you do not see any improvement in the response times (in that case please tell your browser and approximate location - like country - as well)

Insights through Nokia blogs

hartti | 03 May, 2008 02:25

In addition to our Forum Nokia blogs there are number of other (even more?) interesting blogs from Nokia people. Here are a couple of suggestions of blogs providing nice insights...

Ari Jaaksi's blog. Ari is responsible for our Linux and open source based software and strategy. He writes in a leisurely pace, but always interesting stories, even when he is not writing about business...

Another open source related blog from a Nokia colleague. Again, not the most active blog, but posts usually make me think... like this one.

Of course there is also blogs on Java, like Gorkem's blog. Through that blog you can easily follow what is happening in eRCP-world, like here, here and here.

I hope you already been to Nokia betalabs...(I just downloaded SportsTracker from there and tested it already twice while rollerblading...coll stuff). Tommi has a blog in there too. The blog contains announcements of sw updates, like here for Nokia PC Phone but there are also interesting notes about other things around betalabs.

And finally, there are a number of interesting blogs at S60.com. Like this Carbide Dev Team blog. For example, have you updated to Carbide 1.3 yet? (I have not, but that's another story...)

May is Location month at Forum Nokia

hartti | 03 May, 2008 02:22

Last month was Flash, this month the theme is Location Based Services. The Video Player in the Lobby will showcase some LBS stuff... after showcasing a few days a wrap-up video from Bossa 08.

April is Flash Lite month at Forum Nokia

hartti | 05 April, 2008 11:05

And hence the video player on our Lobby site is featuring videos about Flash Lite. The first one is a Flash Lite 3 and Flash video demostration by Debashish Paul (Adobe) using a YouTube FL3 app.

If you have any suggestions for videos featuring Flash Lite to be displayed on the Lobby, send me email (my first name dot my last name at nokia dot com).

Adobe Flash Lite Gallery

Dale Rankine notified of the new look & feel of Adobe's Flash Lite Gallery. Check it out!

Milestone for Flash Lite

hartti | 18 March, 2008 01:31

As usual Biskero and chall3ng3r have reacted faster on Flash Lite news than I have, but here it goes: Bill Perry just noted on his blog, that more than half a billion devices have been shipped with Flash Lite. Impressive.

API for MOSH

hartti | 18 March, 2008 01:07

Did you ever want to experiment with MOSH? Now it is possible, as the, Soon it is possible and the Atom API for MOSH is already out as a draft.

And what is this API for?

"The Nokia MOSH application programming interface (API) implements the Atom Publishing Protocol as a mechanism for publishing, editing, and distributing content on the MOSH platform."

Sorry for the somewhat ugly look&feel of the API document. I ran the original HTML document through Wikitext formatter, which did not do a perfect job... Any suggestions for better tool for this job?

[EDIT: Failed to mention that the API document is of course a draft for a service which does not exist yet and the dev team is interested in getting your feedback. Sorry for jumping the gun.]

BOSSA Conference starting soon!

hartti | 15 March, 2008 02:53

On this coming Sunday (March 16th) some lucky people will be in Porto de Galinhas to attend the BOSSA Conference. Lucky in two ways. 1) Who would not want to visit Brazil? And 2) the event program seems to be excellent.

For those of you who do not know, BOSSA is annual and international conference on open source software for mobile embedded platforms. According to a short email blurp I received just today from the organizers, about 200 people will attend the event. And there are some news articles already on this event - unfortunately in one of the languages I cannot read.

Wiki article ratings could be useful, if they were used...

hartti | 14 March, 2008 04:19

Some time ago we added the possibility to rate articles on our Wiki. Every content page has two rating widgets at the top of the page. One for the for the quality and one for the expertise level (how demanding the article is).

Unfortunately those ratings have not been used much even though in the longer run those ratings could end up being useful tools for locating Wiki articles worth reading. Or articles in need of a total overhaul...

So next time you read an article in our wiki, please, spend few seconds of your time to rate the article you just read. Those few seconds will surely benefit other developers looking for answers.

Video highlights on Lobby

hartti | 13 March, 2008 02:30

It has been a while (loosely speaking, strictly speaking better term is number of months) since I last wrote anything here.  Of course you have been able to find my witty (again, loosely speaking...) comments on FN discussion boards, but those are all only answers to someones problems, not anything original.

On with the show. As some of you have seen we have had the video player on our Lobby site, which we have used to highlight videos related to mobile development. After our recent (small) site update the player got more capabilities and we can now point that to videos on stored on existing video libraries, like YouTube. So we are not limited to the videos we have produced on our own. Trust me, this is a good thing.

This also means that the rotation of the videos gets faster. And at least for the following next months the videos will be highlighted based on monthly themes. March is Web runtime, Widget, Widset, what say you....

The current one out is a headspinning gameplay video of Bombus Widget for WidSets from Lancaster University, which seems to have about 140,000+ downloads at the Widset Web site.

What's the next one? Send your suggestions to me, either through this blog or to my email (you know my first and last name and surprisingly Nokia uses firstName.lastName in the email addresses...)
