AT commands - aren't those so 80's?

hartti | 14 September, 2006 02:12

We have some documentation on how to use AT commands on Forum Nokia Web site although I have to admit that the documentation is scarce (see some AT command reference guides here). To be honest, I did not have a clue anyone was using AT commands anymore - especially to connect to mobile phones - until I started monitoring the general activity on FN discussion boards. If someone is as ignorant as I used to be, here is a short overview what the technology is about (blatant copy-paste from a site praised below - thanks traud!):

"Most GSM/UMTS mobile phones include an internal modem. You can do a lot more with the implemented commands than Internet access or Fax sending for example accessing the standard phonebook or sending, modifying and deleting your short messages (SMS) and there is much more – thanks to the 3GPP TS 27.005 and 27.007 specifications."

Apparently (while I was sleeping) many people are connecting to their phones using this commands set and doing amazing things with the technology. Want to learn more? I suggest you visit this excellent site by FN discussion board super contributor traud. The developer community bows to you :-)

Hi Hartti,

The AT commands are a simple yet very powerful tool to use SMS as a communication channel from the PC. I have been recently trying to implement some applications using this methodology. However my Nokia 6681 doesnt seem to respond to some of the "SMS" AT Commands (The ones needed for Recieving SMS on the PC).

I have been trying to research on the AT Command support provided by this phone. I called up the Asia customer support centre, looked up on the nokia discussion forums etc., But not able to find out whether these AT commands are supported on my Nokia 6681 or not.

The point i am trying to make is that Nokia seems to have neglected this area of messaging. All that i could find was a common AT Command list. These are no help when specific phones return ERRORs on AT Commands.

I would appreciate it if Nokia could work on the following in this category -

1) Phonewise details of which AT commands are supported and which are not.
2) AT Command usage examples - The bare commands become more powerful when used together. We need some examples on how to enter a series of commands to get such things accomplished. Eg: Detailed scenarios like recieving an sms and upon reception automatically responding with another message. Probably this involves some coding as well. But i feel this is necessary.

Hope this is given due diligence.
