Preparing to revamp the blogs, discussion boards and wiki

hartti | 14 October, 2007 17:31

In the past months my blogging activity has been really intermittent - basically my blog entries has been written in bursts far apart. Not very nice for you - my readers.

My excuse is that I have been busy  with working on getting the Forum Nokia developer's online community services (namely discussion boards, blogs and wiki) into better shape. What this means that we will change our blog engine (yes, fellow bloggers, you will receive more information about this in the days to come) to allow us to extend the features of the tool beyond what is possible with the current custom-built one. We will also start bringing the three services closer to each other with more unified look and feel. Hopefully these and other changes we are planning are welcomed and not seen as too disruptive... You'll be the judge soon...

After this "initial" launch we will update the online developer community with more new features. But we would like to also hear from you if there is something you would like us to do. So please send your suggestions to me either as comments on this blog or through my discussion board screen name. I promise to consider and evaluate all suggestions, although I cannot promise implementing them all. There is only so much we can and have time to do....

Hi Hartti,
I post this here so other people could give an opinion, or suggest a good solution for this.
Here is the point (which we discussed Monday) :

The observation is that comments on articles on the wiki are not enough taken into consideration.
Comments are made to 'comment', discuss, and enhance the article by exchange.
So my point is that we need a way to put the wiki comments in a process of discussion.

I suggested that we give the possibility and make it easy and simple (automatic or one click) to open a thread in the discussion boards to discuss the thread.
Why ? Because the boards are where we discuss, and because the structure is good ; anyone can follow what he is interested in, and see what is new.
However, something is missing here (and actually, it more or less also apply to the 'standard' threads of the boards) : there is not much notion of completion, which is necessary to include the discussed comment on the article, and to know which comments have been made already.

So basically, here is what I would appreciate :
- a way to make people read the comment, react, and include what's relevant in the article
- an integrated way to see what are the comments i haven't red, sorted by categories, quickly highlighting the title of the article and of the comment
- a way to know which comments have already been discussed on an article, closed and integrated in the article

hartti Good comment. As I mentioned on Monday, we this is a new idea and we need to evaluate if and how to do it. Thanks!
