Supernovas 7210 and 7610

hartti | 01 July, 2008 01:24

Last week Nokia announced four new Series 40 devices:

After Bill Perry from Adobe asked me about the details of the new 7210 and 7610 devices, I realized that our devices specs are missing that information. As I do not know exactly when that information is going to be inserted on our site (this week is a "holiday" week after all) I thought I need to chip in with some facts before also biskero starts harrassing me...

Both 7210 and 7610 are Series 40 5th Edition FP1 devices (which means that for Java specs, check the table in here) and they have Flash Lite 3.0. As I am not as used to dig out this information as a couple of my colleagues, I cannot guarantee the facts, but I am pretty sure I got this right.

The numbering seems a bit confusing to me. If I remember correctly, we used to have 7610 that is based on S60 2nd Edition. Now we have 7610 that is based on Series 40.

We have been reusing the numbers already for some time. Yes, it is confusing, but note also the the complete names for these devices are Supernova XXXX (and not the simple number like I wrote above)

Whats the logic behind reusing the same numbers when many more are available?

croozeus, unfortunately I do not know the rationale for reusing the numbers. However, note that based on what kind of numbers we have been using in the past, not all of the potential 9999 numbers are available for models (for example very few 4 numbers are used and also the last number is not fully utilized)

Biskero, interesting. Well, that could be because of backwards compatibility (almost) of Flash Lite. I think saying the FL 3 is in there is safe bet for not (and the devices are not yet out anyway...) so we have time to get this right (and the specs in place)

7610 and the customers

internetlabor | 03/07/2008, 00:55

Hallo Harti,
as developer, I'm fine with all product numbers Nokia is using or reusing.

But what about the customer buying a brand new Supernova 7610 with Seriers40v5?
When the customer want picks up some software, she find a lot of S60v2 software for the old 7610, but will not notice the difference, and it fails to install.

The customer might also get some extra hardware, like a wonderful Nokia bluetooth keyboard. When she pick it in a shop, the package of the keyboard shows that it is compatible with a 7610, but in reality it requires a S60 phone.....
Later in the lifetime, the customer may need a new battery for the phone.....

So, Nokia will create some bad user experiences for their customers with every phone model number that is reused.
Maybe you can forward it to the marketing people.

Regards

Karsten Meier

Thanks for the feedback. I'll pass this on to someone (I do not yet know who, but someone...)
