Not Allowed to Comment? Try this!

JOM | 08 May, 2009 11:19

Heard yesterday from a truly experienced Forum Nokia person that he wanted to comment my previous blog article - but could not:

You are not allowed to proceed with this request.
The authentication code is wrong.

This was a surprise, because the problem is an old one! I asked about that already 2 months ago in Discussion Board. The given solution still works, at least for me:

  1. Use Firefox (might work with Internet Explorer, too)
  2. Open new Tab
  3. Copy URL from old tab to new tab
  4. Copy all your comment data to new tab
  5. Give security code, usually SAME as the failed one
  6. It works !!!

If this doesn't work for you, then I propose that all FN Blog authors create a thread at Discussion Board for commenting. Mine would be this, naturally.

...have to admit I was wondering a bit about this. There was especially Mark Wilcox's article "The Future Symbian UI - the most important thing not discussed in Monaco", which should have gathered dozens of comments - but didn't get a single one! Not a one, shame on us! Btw I didn't comment, because I noticed that news already during NDS. Was waiting to see what others would think about it. Really major news.

I was also wondering what is the purpose of FN blogging, if this kind of known defect is left open. Blogs are important part of creating a community. If commeting is disabled, or made very hard, that might be seen as a signal to discourage blogging. I would definitely think very hard before next article, if I wasn't used to such. My personal blog elsewhere has comments disabled on purpose, so writing without feedback is ok.

Cheers,

This blog system really sucks a lot.

Testing

Trying with Mozilla,

Try #1 - Normally
Try #2 - with the tip now!
Try #3 - Re-logged in!
Try #4 - Restarting browser after clearing the catche (finally I see a new authentication)

Btw, I don't see the tip to work - when you open the blog post in a new tab - the authentication code is going to be regenerated logically (but it shows the same one - thats a bug, imo). The user see the old authentication code - not the new one that is generated logically but not shown physically- so the error again for me on Try #2.

Solution that always worked for me is - logging out and back in or restarting the browser after clearing the catche (that includes re-login) - but too much exercise!

Hopeful,
Croozeus

Been having trouble with this for ages

I've abandoned a few comments in the past (in some cases emailing the author instead to avoid a complete waste of my typing effort). Usually I can comment one blog post but if I try to comment another in the same session (restarting the browser doesn't work for me - I seem to need a complete reboot cycle) then it doesn't authenticate. Even to make the first comment I often need to refresh the page multiple times and try the codes again.

This seemed to co-incide with the website look and feel update, since which I've been spending a lot less time here for a number of reasons. Still don't like the new look or funtionality though, haven't got used to it after several visits. Still trying to persuade the other folks at the Symbian Foundation that we don't want a white background for everything too, particularly the forums... no luck so far.

Testing 2 in a row

Just got the error once with that last post (back and then refresh fixed it), thought I'd see if I could post again to the same blog.

The answer was no. Trying the new tab trick for this effort.

Interesting

Sorry for spamming your blog Jouni...

On that last one, the new tab didn't work, nor did refreshing in the new tab. Then I refreshed again and the image with the code updated but I clicked 'Send' with the previous code still entered and the comment succeeded, I'll try that again.

One more for luck

Put the code in, send (fails), then click back link, then refresh but don't update the code to the new one before pressing send.

This should really be fixed. :-)

I'm using Firefox 3.0.10 BTW but I don't think it matters.

You could have asked me

Nokia Ron | 11/05/2009, 23:33

Hi,
You could have asked. :) This is a known problem with the captcha cache not freeing up as it should. If you enter the wrong captcha image for some reason it caches and does not get free, even doing a refresh or going to a new page and coming back, deleteing cookies doesn't work unless you restart the browser and you don't need to then. As you discovered the only solution is restarting the browser or opening a new Tab in IE 7 or FF with Tabs.

The problem has been here since the captcha was initiated. It is a standard captcha plugin and no one else seems to have a problem. Personally I just hope that it automagically starts working correctly. Until then I'll see if I can change the warning page.

No one else seems to have a problem ?!?!?

Well, I did ask, didn't I. And you told me what's the problem :)
http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161607

I find it strange when you say "no one else seems to have a problem". The FN blogs used to have lots of comments, enough to make it actual discussion. If the more or less recent lack of comments is not caused by this problem, then I'm worried..

Anyway, I do have this problem. Same day I wanted to comments some comment(s) written for this article - and could not. Nothing worked at all, tried 10+ different ways. Nope, will not clear my browser cache. I need that data. Now let's see, if I may submit this...

Fingers crossed,

It's much worse than you're suggesting Ron

I have, to my knowledge, never had a problem with this because I've got the captcha wrong (indeed getting it deliberately wrong seems to be the only way I can post successfully). This wasn't the case for me when captcha was first introduced. Also, restarting the browser doesn't work for me...

Jouni, I assume when Ron says "no one else seems to have a problem" he means other sites using the same captcha plug-in rather than other FN users.

I have experienced the same problem

When I was blogging at the developer summit I experienced this problem as well. I tried to respond to a comment and also got this error message. Restarting the browser or even the computer did't help. The only things which did word was using a different browser or clearing the cache. It is also not related to the OS because I noticed it om my mac and on a virtual machine using windows.

I also have this problem

We often face this when trying to comments, but usually on other sites. Most of the time the problem will just stick for on-etwo days, and then come back to normal. classified ads |job listings |bathroom furniture
