Don't expect miracles here, don't expect solutions to world's problems. It is more likely that I will ask [myself] questions looking for a always elusive answer.
And of course: "All opinions expressed in this blog are the author's own and do not necessarily represent the official view of Nokia". I mean it!

Here's another "mind map" that I hope will help developers understand what are the implications of Platform Security on the Symbian Signed process. To me it is self-explanatory but I would happily answer any questions you might have on the topic.
Updated on 25.03.2008: Now showing some hints with regards to the signing/certification costs. This however is a complex story as the fees charged by the test houses are variable, e.g. based on the targeted market. For more details (including prices) see the wiki article on Test houses.
Updated on 11.06.2008: Click the following link to download the mind map.

I like your mind maps, very informative and obvious.

AFAIK, the Express Signed Certification, grants you access also to the Restricted Capabilities group.
ltomuta | 22/03/2008, 15:25
Certified Signed is the only release certification option for applications using such capabilities. See table on page 8 of The Complete Guide to Symbian Signed.

ltomuta | 24/03/2008, 01:46
You will have to open a thread on the apropriate forum on the Discussion Boards (Symbian C++ / Signing & certification). Make sure to provide details about what exactly goes wrong.

Thank you Lucian for pointing my attention on Express Signed capabilities.
I made confusion with Open Signed + PublisherID.
jplauril | 25/03/2008, 11:23
Could you add also the cost of each option to the mindmap?
ltomuta | 25/03/2008, 14:45
I will do that.
JOM | 11/06/2008, 13:51
Is there some way to download and save your mindmap on local harddisk? I'd like to print it, put on the wall and consider my options.
Thanx,
--jouni
ltomuta | 11/06/2008, 13:57
I will add a link to ease the download.

Lucian

Hi,
can I ask a question about messaging? Which type of security it is under? And which type of cert it is required?
Thank you
Hans
ltomuta | 10/07/2008, 08:34
Messaging is a large domain, you have to narrow it as per your specific needs and use cases and then evaluate the Platform Security implications. Are you talking about adding support for a new type of message (MTM would need up to ALL-TCB, depending on the targeted platform release) or just sending an SMS (which if I remember correctly works even without any capabilities)?
The certification variant depends on the capabilities needed so it depends on the answer to the question above.
I've been poking my nose in mobile software development since 2000, starting on what was then the ER5 and Ericsson's R380. Since then I've been doing a bit of everything on the S60 Platform, from learning its bits and pieces to helping others find their way trough the maze.
