Finally - Skype for Symbian! (kind of)

natecow | 12 February, 2007 10:29

I was enjoying some high-speed connectivity in Geneva on Friday at LIFT07, and stumbled upon an application I've been wanting on my Nokia for years: a Skype client. iSkoot is the name of the company - and their approach is a bit different from the other (pocket pc) mobile Skype clients I've seen. The app makes the phone actually place a local call to their server which then connects the user to the  chosen phone number or skype buddy. This makes a lot of sense for users who have a low bandwidth / expensive data plan that can't consistently support duplex voip conversations. However, for someone in a foreign country without a working sim card but access to a high speed wifi connection - it doesn't seem to do the job. And also unfortunately for me, it doesn't seem to work in Kenya either, but they apparently support most other locations. Would be interested in hearing some reviews from the Symbian community...

antonypr Nathan, if you have a high-speed WiFi connection, you can try Fring (www.fring.com). It is also VoIP that uses data-plan. It is different from iSkoot because you don't need to make local call.

Hi Nathan, as mentioned in the previous comment, Fring is something to look at! For me, that is actaully the 1st Skype client for Symbian,

It works pretty well on GPRS and 3G as well.

Good to see that there is some interest in mobile dev in Africa, you may want to have a look at my previous employers website, (http://www.meraka.org.za). Its a South African government funded research company that focuses on wireless technology.

natecow Just loaded Fring on my E61, but it hangs at the login screen. Seems like they are only fully supporting the N80 and N80i - but I'd imagine more handsets are just around the corner... Looking forward to seeing a working version! Looks like it could just the app I'm looking for. http://www.fring.com/blog/?p=17

Hi Nathan
I am using N71. I recommend mig33, eqo and fring are all good alternatives. The drawback of iSkoot to me is that the iSkoot client on my phone try to make a call to +16178616039. It's a internation call, and not a good idea to me.
Regards,
Eric

natecow Thanks for the note Eric. I thought the iSkoot client would try to make the call to a domestic number if your country was supported... I like the EQO idea of connecting to your mobile using skypeout from your personal computer - but after some tweaking I've now got fring working, so I'm going to stick with that for the time being. While the voice quality isn't great, even local calls are now much more affordable. (GPRS/EDGE in Kenya is 7MB/dollar.) Hurray for mobile VOIP for the masses!
