Nokia - a City

croozeus | 14 June, 2008 11:29

As summer holidays approach people tend to take a break, so here is non-technical post on my behalf !

Before quoting anything, I would like to ask a question,

How many of you knew "Nokia" as a city?

I don't know how many of you knew it.

Atleast, I was not aware about this fact. People in Finland would know about this all right.

Today I just came across an interesting article in The Times Of India, one of the leading newspapers in India, which described that Nokia is a city in (SOUTH-WEST FINLAND) !

 It Quotes

"Even though nearly two billion people around the world rely on and recognise the brand because they own the mobile, few know its story began in a town called Nokia."

You can read the interesting article here!

And don't forget to seach here for "Nokia".

Cheers!

Hi Pankaj,
Thanks for the article URL, however I thought the name originates from river Nokia at Finland. Maybe the city and the river are close to each other?

Nokia, Finland

I live in Finland, and can confirm, there is a town by the name Nokia, but not a city. It has been in the news here quite recently following problems with the towns water system being polluted.

I heard that Nokia once was a miningcompany... Is this true?

Nokia has done all kinds of things

Read short introduction to Nokia's history from http://www.nokia.com/A4303001 and be surprised what they have produced; rubber boots, toilet paper, mobile phones, cables, tires etc.

By the way, town of Nokia is situated next to town of Ylöjärvi. Imagine if they had established their paper mill there at the 19th century and now they would have hard time trying to launch that name as a mobile phone brand...
