My principal interest in mobile applications is to push the boundaries of innovation to create uniquely mobile experiences. I hope my blogs excite and challenge developers to think 'outside the box'.

Despite being over exited by the prospect of the 3-D sensor on the 5500 I though I would highlight another new game we have developed called ‘mobslinger’ which brings together some of the recent discussions regarding Bluetooth and MoSoSo.

Mobslinger runs as a background application on S60 device which periodically scans for other users in the vicinity who are also running the mobslinger application. Once detected, a countdown timer is initiated on both phones which alerts the user by sounding an alarm and vibrating the phone. The user then has to ‘draw’ their mobile and enter the randomly generated number which has appeared on the screen as quickly as possible. The person with the fastest time is the winner and the loser is ‘killed’, which means their application is locked out from game-play for a set period of time. The game is playable in a number of different modes which we have termed ‘Quick Draw’ (basic two player mode, ‘Blood Bat’ (shoot everyone in site), Last Man Standing (multi-player competition), and Outlaws (team game).

We have also included a ranking system into the game to satisfy the desire of some experienced players being able to differentiate themselves from novices. The basic player starts out with a one star rating and this is increased in stages until they reach a 5 star rating as shown. The levels are based upon games played, kills made and then their kill/die ratio. The levels are built up from satisfying a defined minimum for each of these criteria for each advancement level.

My PhD student Helen will present the initial design at the Fun and Games conference next week (and yes I do spend some time in my office despite recent evidence to the contrary). Additionally while many mobile games become uninspiring for the developers once the excitement of the design process is complete, this game offers a whole new set of research opportunities and I hope to blog some of the experiences of the users once we start the proper trials.
