Mapvertising

I came across another new term this week (don’t you just love them) the so-called ‘mapvertising’ whereby advertisers are targeting maps sites as places to promote there wares. This includes both general route planners to mash-ups. As anyone who reads my blogs I am a long term advocate of the Web 2.0 and Where 2.0 mash-ups and it is in interesting to see it permeating through to more mainstream activities.

In the article in the Times Online David Rowan discusses the use of roof space as a prime advertising location as so many of mapping sites use satellite and aerial photographs. Pointing to the example of Target in the US who has large targets painted on their store roofs we may be able to generate revenue if we live near an interesting location. Before you all rush out to paint your roofs you may want to consider that for many places these photographs are a few years out of date.
