When hand waving becomes a dangerous sport!

coultonp | 18 December, 2006 15:57

I have been following the growing number of wii related accidents on the aptly named, wii have a problem, which ranges from black eyes and cut hands, from inadvertently hitting light fittings or friends, to broken monitors if the straps on the controller break.

This is interesting to me as we are just finishing a project called Poppet which allows the 5500 motion sensors to be used as a PC controller via Bluetooth. Perhaps I need to get some better accident cover before I test this!

PS: Has anyone got any details of how to get the J2ME drivers working. We have done the project for S60 and have got a J2ME version working on the emulator but cant get it to install on the phone.

hartti Handwawing has been dangerous sport since sales people started promising impossible-to-implement product features to customers while waving in their hands in front of the whiteboard and a well-rehearsed PPT slideshow.

There, I had my Dilbert-moment of the day.

But seriously, I think you need to have a special firmware on your phone to be able use the sensor API. Unless of course you use the midpjni workaround and have a native app running on the background providing the sensor data to your MIDlet.

I think you are allowed at least one dilbert moment in every day it helps keep us sane.

Thanks for the information about the sensor its what i had anticipated but I was hoping to save myself a jod in doing a background native app. We have a J2ME games course with our undergraduates and I thought it would be nice if they could use the senros for some games.

Ah well I suppose it will give us something to do over the holidays

hartti Hi Paul,

Check out the Python extension for sensor reading.

Is this too late for your students?

Thanks i had not seen this but I managed (finally) to create a native Symbian app that will link through a socket to J2ME. We have a nice little demo going now i will blog about soon
