Predicting the mobile future for 2007!

coultonp | 04 January, 2007 14:19

I came across a really interesting piece in the Guardian technology section relating to what Futurologists have predicted in relation to technology over that last century and how accurate they have been. Seeing as it is the New year I thought it might be interesting if we did a spot of navel gazing and predicted what we thought would be the big hits  in the mobile arena for the coming year and see if we can do better that the 50% hit rate indicated in the article. Anyway to get the ball rolling I think this year we will:

finally see location based services coming to the fore(N95 should help here);

flat rate data tariffs becoming more widespread;

emergence of a mobile centred social space likely based on presence;

large amount of Flash generated content;

thoughts anyone?

Nokia Ron I agree that location bases services are going to be big.

My prediction is the emergence of phones that work over WLANs at home or in WiFi sites like cafes and airports.

It will be interesting to see how the WiFi phone combo takes off. I have a mobile subscription which allows me to access both WiFI hostpots and mobile on a flat rate. T

The trouble is I live in a small city and i can never seem to find a convenient hotspot so i end up constantly using the mobile netwrok which is fine when you are on flat rate.

My personal feeling is that there needs to be a shift in the way hostpsots are operated before it goes mass market

Sorry, I might have a typo in my previous post. So this is the revised one.
I think of operator wall-gardened wap portals will fade out and internet portals come in. Same contents and applications similar with their internet counterparts will be common.
The OpenID concept will be more popular because of its simplicity and easy to use/remember. One username/password (your open id) goes everywhere.
And, the VoIP (sip) will be big as we've seen more and more smart phones with 3G/WLAN capability in this year. However, I think it will take one year or two to become mature in the mass market due to power consumption concerns.

I see your point about portals but I feel that people what to find apps quickly on their phone rather than take in a long search as they might on the internet. This would seem to give the power to on-phone operator catalogues.

I agree about one id and certainly IMS will help this.

I agree aboutvoip and sip and your comment about the maturaty of the wifi market i think we havent got a good acces model yet.

I agree about your point that simplicity and easy to find stuffs seems to give on-phone op catalog an edge. However, my thinking is that op is losing control of what subscribers can do with their phones, in a form of wall-gardened wap portal. In a much bigger pipe of 3g network and with the aid of search engine, I believe internet (like) portals will be in prime time down the road. I love E61 and really enjoy of opera mini, gmail, skype and orb bringing funs and efficiency to me.

I think you are right that there are many people with the technical savy to acess to content I just feel the majority wont have an E61 type device and therfore still crave simplicity. To use one of Mark Ollila's favourite expressions whilst content may be king distribution is king kong and my personal feeling is that on device catlogs will hold sway at least for the near future.

I guess the nice thing about all this is we can look back on this next year and see what happens

Another sign of my internet portal dominance theory. Yahoo announced the Yahoo! Mobile (http://mobile.yahoo.com) on 1/9, though most of news coverage went to Apple iPhone on the same day. It's a java based Yahoo portal on handsets. Most of handsets have Java.
