Hi, I'm Paul, but you can also call me Todd and I won't get upset.

Microsoft CE Emulator Goes Open Source

Paul.Todd | 20 July, 2006 11:28

Microsoft are definalty leading the way with their Windows CE Emulation (or to be correct Simulation).

Features include
  • CPU emulator that executes the ARM instruction set by JIT-compiling to x86
  • An MMU emulator to support virtual memory and page protection
  • A motherboard emulator that contains emulated RAM and NOR flash memory
  • A collection of peripheral devices attached to the motherboard: serial ports, LCD controller, touchscreen, keyboard, interrupt controller, programmable timers, real-time-clock, network cards, audio, etc.
  • A “DMA” interface which allows a Win32 application running outside the emulator to communicate with a WinCE application running inside the emulator, using a simple socket-like programming model.
Even though this is in effect a techview release of the emulator, it would be really nice to see Symbian provide the same level of emulation that Microsoft do, especially regarding the native arm support which provides full ARM emulation including alignment faults, which are the bane of every project that has one hacker on it :)

Come on Symbian, give us a better emulator! If Microsoft can do it and make it open source, this definitely raises the bar for you guys!

p.s FileMan is stuck in Symbian signed :(

as a developer for both microsoft pocketpc and nokia series 40 and 60 phones for a few years, i could see that not only microsoft has a better emulator, but it also has hit the jackpot...that is, WIFI... First thought of WiFi brings nothing great to a mobile phone (battery buster, small connected area..etc), but on second thought... WIFI is changing the world of communication... read about skype, Msn messenger, yahoo messenger... they are all FREE for the consumers... Even the most basic PPC comes with a WIFI built in... I hope nokia would wake up to the new trend of fast wildly growing (because it is free) WIFI uses and put them into every basic phone... NOKIA... you are missing a huge turn in free online chat, free voice over IP, and free PC connection... please look into this... WIFI coverage is already in some states in USA and now in Taiwan... importantly, cheap wireless router almost available in every household in developed countries... How many devices do you have WIFI? email me at yong54321@hotmail.com if you are still not convinced...

hartti Not related to the open sourcing of the emulator, but more as a response to the comment by Ioh.

Many Nokia smart phones have WiFi. Look at the N-series and E-series phones. There is also UMA (see http://www.umatechnology.org/) in the 6136 phone.

hi... i see what you mean... but the number of nokia model with wifi at the moment can be count by my 10 fingers. And they are not available in the mass market for the series 40 or 60 phones. I could see that free voice over ip via wifi is not very welcome by most service phone network provider, I dont think they will wholely support them as it takes away their main stream pay per voice call profit. The non-traditional phone makers or router company sees the wifi opportunities are linksys, Dlink. They releases basic wifi phone model which allows people to make free call to anyone in the world with wifi connection.
