RDA: S60 vs. Series 40

Rippe | 09 October, 2007 08:50

Hello,

We are internally wondering the importance of adding Series 40 devices to RDA (you know, the service which allows you to access devices over the Internet, www.forum.nokia.com/rda). What do you think? Should we also support Series 40 or just stick with S60 support?

Please note that we did add few SIMs there as well, so in case you have not tried them out yet...

slimpixi what i wish more than anything is that you would develop a screen shot tool for the s 40 platform...

tote_b5 Yeah, why not? Besides it also annoys me that there's only a few (one?) S60 2nd device in the portfolio (I mean in RDA's). It's as if you had forgotten about the fact that there're still lots of older models out there.

Cheers,

Tote

Rippe Tote,

Which devices would you like to see in RDA?

tote_b5 Risto,

Well it happened to me a few weeks ago that I needed to test a feature on a 2.0, 2.1 and 2.6 based phones. None of them are available in RDA. You know, it's still vital for a lot of developers to develop sw to such "old" phones, so why not add them to RDA? I'm not saying that you should add more than one in each category, just add one per platform version. Then you make some usage statistics (I'm sure you do:) to see the demand for these phones.

Anyway, I think it's a brilliant service both in terms of the idea and how it has been implemented, I'm just missing some other phones from the (S60) portfolio. But I also understand that this service, as with everything, just needs some time to further improve.

Keep up the good work,

Tote

Ps.: I'm looking fw to your presentation in London. :)

N70 was already there (S60 2nd ed. FP3) and I just added 6680 (S60 2nd ed. FP2). As for even older devices we will have to do some compability testing first, but taken into consideration.

Yes please - I think S40 support would be very useful (speaking as someone who predominantly develops in J2ME). Essentially, the S60 devices behave in a very similar manner to each other (3rd ed. anyway) compared to Series 40.

yes! It would be great. Please could you add always the last models?

firt | 11/10/2007, 01:03

firt Yes! It could be a great feature! In many countries, as latin american ones, Series 40 is still the main platform of many mobile software. Java and Flash Lite are still the best platforms to develop in Series 40. So, one vote for yes ;-)

Regards,
