Remote Device Access - Testing on the Latest Devices

Nokia Ron | 30 March, 2007 19:45

Forum Nokia's new Remote Device Access (RDA) technology allows application testing on actual target devices over the Internet .

The system consists of a device pool connected to a server, and users connecting to the server in order to remotely use the devices. Once a user has connected to a device, the screen of the device is transferred to the user's desktop in real time.
You can install applications on the device, transfer files, and analyze log files in real time. This enables developers to test your mobile applications and services on various Symbian based Nokia devices. RDA is an Internet-based solution, and the requirements for using the service are only a standard Web browser and the Java™ Web Start that typically comes with Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

This is simple and free and is available to anyone registered with Forum Nokia.

hartti Just to add small detail. When you log in to the system you can reserve testing time from a pool of devices. Currently there is a selection of S60 3rd Edition devices plus N95 from S60 3rd Edition FP1 device group. The device pool will be adjusted based on demand.

Nokia Ron The remote device access lets you use the internet to test in real time. In order to use bluetooth you'd have to have the devices yourself.

Actually, as the devices are close by each other it would be quite possible to do that - given that you reserve and use two devices simultaneously (just click "Start RDA" twice to start two instances of the system).

very good !!! I'll try soon also the bluetooth connection. It's for testing jsr-82 capabilities of an application. These are great news.

Also I suppose some kind of multidevice-functionality can be considered in the future; the possibility to display the screens of 2 device directly on the same window etc. As Heikki pointed out, currently this would require opening 2 separate instances of devUI to be launched in order to control both devices simultaneously. But in principle, it's doable.
