Nokia N93 application design: baby steps

kevin_s2f | 26 May, 2007 00:25

I’ve been working on my ToDo list this week. Well, working might be a stretch. It’s been one of those weeks where my brains been thinking it through, but there’s been precious few hours for me to dedicate to the project. Even so, I’ve made some progress. Just a couple of baby steps, but progress.
Baby steps.

  • I created my first Wiki entry. Not my code (thanks Ravi!), but it was a good excuse to work through the process. It was also amazing to me how much content, and in particular how many code samples (almost 200) have been contributed already. I’ll be relying on the code samples a lot, and contributing what I can. If you haven’t checked it out, you’re missing a great resource. And at the pace new content is being contributed, if you haven’t checked it out lately, there are a lot of articles you haven’t seen.

Speaking of contributing, hats off to everybody who has posted code up there. Forum Nokia Champions have been especially generous, and eleven have been rewarded with complimentary Nokia N95 devices and sponsored air fare to Singapore for Forum Nokia Champion Days the week of June 18. So if you’re in Singapore for Nokia Connection  or Communicasia, look for a Champion.
  • I’ve got a lead on a possible Flash Lite opportunity thanks to Allesandro’s timely post. I have been wondering if I would be able to use a high-level environment like Python or Flash Lite and still provide the detailed manipulation of multimedia I/O that I need. I’ve got some reading to do.
  • And I’ve got the list of the minimal features I’ll be incorporating into my first pass of this project. It is a quite basic list, but I’m thinking baby steps here. Get something that works, exercise the primary disciplines I’ll need, and build from there.

So, the minimalist design includes
  • Create a basic tasting record, consisting of one element incorporating one image, one voice clip, and one data tag selected from a pre-assigned list.
  • Review the records in the order in which they were created.

That brings me to the technology selection phase, and once again thanks to Allesandro for the timely advice. Over the next week or week or so I need to decide which platform runtime to build against and which tool chains to bring on line. If you have any suggested resources for me to read, please post the URLs and why you think they’re good material.

Also, I will try to arrange one or more “live” sessions with specific Nokia experts to discuss the pros and cons of using Python, Flash Lite, and C++/Open C with Carbide.c++. You’re welcome to join those discussions, so keep an eye on the blog and I’ll let you know at least a couple of days in advance before these happen.

With that I’m off for the weekend. Hope you are too. And to my American colleagues headed out for the three-day Memorial Day weekend -- honor the fallen and have a blast, but designate a driver. Arrive alive.
