JavaFX announced

JavaFX is a new family of Java technology-based products that will help content providers create and deploy rich Internet applications (RIA). Available today are the first two JavaFX releases: JavaFX Script and JavaFX Mobile.
- A new scripting language, JavaFX Script gives Java developers the power to quickly create content-rich applications for the widest variety of clients, including mobile devices, set-top boxes, desktops, even Blu-ray discs. Content creators now have a simple way to develop content for any Java Powered consumer device.
- JavaFX Mobile is a complete software system for mobile devices. It is available via OEM licenses to carriers, handset manufacturers, and other companies that want to simplify and accelerate the development of a powerful standardized software system that can be leveraged across a wide range of consumer devices.

As being new to Java FX I can ask: how is this different from Flash and why another scripting language? So, I agree with you - it's Flash Lite alternative in Java platform (but there's also OpenLaszlo project). You can find some samples of Java FX script at: https://openjfx.dev.java.net/Getting_Started_With_JavaFX.html. In my opinion Java FX will be good as 'next evolution step' for mobile java (more enhanced UI) and direct rival for Flash (but the big question arrives: will 'Write Once, Run Anywhere' really work better than now? - it's said to work on many devices like TV sets...)

If Sun is distributing an OS+JVM type package to Device Manufacturers, it seems like an alternative to Symbian to me

We were introduced to JavaFX - which is a product family currently consisting of JavaFX Script and JavaFX Mobile.JavaFX Script is a scripting language designed to "drive the Swing and Graphics 2D classes insane". It can be used to create very rich interfaces in a declarative style. JavaFX Script bytecode can run on any existing Java Runtime.

Looks like Sun is waking up for Flash Lite and SVG. But, what your opinion about MIDP future using JavaFX? I know JavaFX will support older versions, but it's a huge change for CLDC (at least)...
