Carbide code bookmarks

During last weeks I’ve took part in FN Wiki November Contest. Yeah it would be cool to have N95 here, in Sevastopol :-) However we’ll wait till the results.

I decided to contribute to Wiki with the articles and the examples of what I’ve learned about Symbian programming.

I want to post here some articles that are related to my blog.

The code bookmarks in Carbide.

Carbide is designed to make development process more effective. Here is one feature which is inherited from Eclipse and which I like. It is a Bookmarks feature.

It lets you to mark any line in your source code assigning a description. After that you can navigate to it with help of a bookmarks dialog.

You can put a bookmark simply pressing right mouse button on a line numbers tab.

But it is more comfortable to assign a hotkey.

To assign a hotkey, go to Windows->Preferences. In filter text type “keys”. Select “Modify” tab. At “Command” section pick “Edit”. As a “name” pick “Add bookmark”. At the next “Key sequence” section press a key combination (I chose ALT+B). Press 'Add' button.

Now you can press Alt+B at any line to bookmark it.

You can assign a hotkey to show Bookmarks window.
To do that repeat the same actions but pick “Views” at “Category” dropdown. And then pick “Show view (view: Bookmarks)” at name section. Select key combination. I chose “CTRL+ALT+B”.

Now you can navigate bookmarks by pressing Enter or double mouse click to pass to suitable line.

To make it more comfortable assign the Bookmarks view as a Fast View:

Now it can be easily removed by ESC key

and easily retrieved by CTRL+ALT+TAB hotkey.

In my mind it is very convenient and greatly simplifies code navigation.

Get project from CVS to Carbide C++

It recently for me to describe how to Checkout the project’s source codes directly to Carbide C++. So I decided to carry such an explanation to a single post and refer to it.

To get sources from CVS to Carbide workspace.

Open new workspace in Carbide.
Choose “Window->Open perspective->Other->CVS Repository Exporting”
At the left side of window (on CVS Repositories tab) click Right mouse button and choose: “New->repository Location”.

Fill in following data:

Host: bluspan.cvs.sourceforge.net
Repository path: /cvsroot/bluspan
User: anonymous
Connection type: pserver

After Location is created, click “Head”, then right-button click at the project you want to get and pick “Check out”.
You may need then to import project: File->Import->Simbian OS Bld.inf. The Bld.inf file is usually situated at “group” folder.

2. To get sources from Zip archive.

Extract files from archive
Create new Carbide workspace
Import project by: File->Import->Simbian OS Bld.inf.

The Bld.inf file is usually situated at “group” folder.

Obtaining Carbide license

After Carbide C++ v.1.2 product was downloaded at http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/resources/tools_and_sdks/carbide_cpp/

there was a period while all features were enabled. I used Carbide professional edition.

Then the test period was over, and Carbide came to Express(free, test) edition automatically.

For now I could not use UI Designer tool.

As a S2F blogs author, I was linked up with https://pro.forum.nokia.com/ launchpad program. We ordered there license of Carbide Developer edition.

It took some time to understand, why the license is not still available for me though it was ordered. The reason was that there are different statuses of launchpad members. They are: the account owner and the account users. After purchasing Carbide, the account owner directs the license to account user. At this step user can activate the license.

There are “Node-locked” and “Floating” licenses models. The first means, that the license will be tied to concrete user’s computer by mac-address. The floating license allows to use several carbide products on several computers inside one development team’s network.

My license was node-locked. I clicked “Activate” link in front of license in my account.

The activation page has appeared. There I putted in my mac-address. I have Windows XP machine, so I used “IP CONFIG /ALL” command in prompt to retrieve those address. The license’s text appeared on screen, I copied it to Carbide’s “Help->Carbide Licenses->Install License”.

That was it. After IDE restarted I have had already enabled UI Designer feature.

The S60v3 SDK wants to be registered after 14 days too. It is simple free registration. The code would be send to your e-mail.

BluSPAN project starts

Hi, my name is Konstantine!

As you see I'm going to initiate the development and coordinate the BluSPAN (Blu_etooth S_ymbian PAN) project.
BluSPAN will be a client/server suite to allow bluetooth PAN in Symbian OS.

One of the more interesting parts and what makes this effort different is we will use Radius for accounting access and authorization. So that you can use what we will develop we will distribute a class for much of the functions.

But before all of that, I'll tell couple words about me.

I'm novice at cell phone and wireless programming. I'm 22 years old. I got my degree Information systems and technology expert from the Sevastopol National Technical University in Sevastopol, Ukraine. During education I had taken part in several projects, some RTS games, some math applications, AI and some web. Most of them were developed with C++.

Fishnest ltd, is my first full time job. Here I have done some work with wireless using OPENWRT. My Boss got the idea of developing bluetooth PAN with Radius over Symbyan OS and at the same time to find out how novice engineer can process a task that he never touched before. Nokia also found the idea of a newbie writing for the first time interesting to give us one of the first Start to Finish Blogs.

There is no doubt that this project would be useful and exciting. If you want to provide some help and comments, you are welcome and I will be grateful. All this project will be open source so you will help everyone!

Your client should fit in the "other protocols" section of the Symbian OS Bluetooth networking implementation. Upon completion of the Encapsulation class, you will be charged with the task of creating a PAN client for the S60 / S80 operating system

The roadmap provided to you will lead you into undocumented and perhaps unfriendly territory as you attempt to debug your application to work with the Windows XP PAND. The implementation of a Network Access Server will be required to handle network Access and provide concurrent information to a Radius Server. Again, unchartered territory. Slight modification to Chillispot http://www.chillispot.org/ may be possible allowing it to handle pseudo Ethernet devices (bnep0, etc) You should attempt this ONLY under a 2.6 Kernel with BlueZ and Affix as your Bluetooth stacks. The stock FreeRadius will be ideal.

A windows implementation of a network access server should also be developed. Codename WIN-PAND-RADIUS You must ensure it's downloadable, foolproof and just like the rest of your mission OPEN SOURCE - We suggest GPL. The free world as we know it depends on you.
