Designs on the Community

 <dc:description>

I don't know about you, but for me I started programming because my computer did not do something I wanted it to do or I thought I could do it better. Well, to be more accurate, it was something my computer did but did not do effectively so I wrote a batch program. Wow that was fun, then a bit of Gee Whiz Basic and I was hooked. This same desire to change or modify a machine still exists and one of the first ways to personalize a mobile device is to set up the background picture on your device.

It used to be when you thought of graphics and mobile devices your only thought was the ads that they appeared in. Recently wallpaper and themes have entered into the developer (and some hobbyist) mentality but generally we developers consider this low tech areas. Well guess again, the technologies for creating graphics is quite advanced and what you can do with them is very exciting. A new wave of developers is arriving and they are improving or personalizing their devices using graphics

To help those people and you also I have created a new Wiki Portal for Design and a new Discussion Forum for Themes and Design. Stop by and chat with people and have a bit of fun. Download the Carbide.ui Theme Edition and see what it will do for your S40 or S60 device.

You don't need to be an artist to do graphics anymore.

Get your product featured on MOSH with Spotlight Content

 <dc:description>

There is an interesting development at MOSH with the launch of the new Spotlight Content where developers can pay to have their applications highlighted on MOSH. MOSH wants to get the word out to the small developers first. MOSH believes that once the word gets out that the bigger development houses will take all the ads. So if you are a small firm right now is a good time to promote your product on MOSH.

Spotlight helps elevate your brand and mobile content through sponsoredplacement on Mosh. Through Spotlight, your mobile content will gain increased visibility, access to a global audience, a multi-channel distribution platform and access to today's most tech savvy audience who are actively looking for ways to improve their mobile experience.

Your content will appear in a highlighted area as users browse and search the site. If your content item matches a user's browsing pattern or search, your item will appear in the Spotlight section.

MOSH is Nokia’s vehicle for connecting, empowering and discovering the individuals who are actively shaping the future of the mobile Web.
MOSH connects content creators with a global community of consumers that are looking for free ‘stuff’for their phones

 <dc:description>

While I was in the service, we always had to follow the chain of command. There was never any chance to just sound off to the person above you and tell them what you thought. In work we have an open door policy and I can always go and tell my boss what I think...(although on some subjects discretion is wise).

Now you have a chance to sound off to the senior executives in Forum Nokia starting with the big man himself Thomas Libretto the Vice President of Forum Nokia. Also various directors from all over the world have made their self available and listed contact addresses of others in the organiztion.

This unique opportunity is on trial for one month, I encourage you to take this time to ask questions and send your comments to people that can help you do your job.

 <dc:description>WidSets Challenge 2008 is open to all students from all universities, polytechnics & colleges. The Challenge aims to allow students to showcase ideas and working models of their applications. The objective of the Challenge is to harness creativity and build the students' passion for innovation through mobile Web 2.0 technologies. WidSets service by Nokia is a popular consumer Internet service where users can create, publish, enjoy, and share their favorite Internet content on their mobile phones. It uses mini-applications called 'widgets' to identify updates made to the user's favorite Internet sites and pushes the content to a phone as soon as it becomes available. WidSets Scripting Language ("Helium") provides powerful Java-like environment to develop both mobile internet applications and stand-alone applications e.g. games.
Read more at http://www.betavine.net/web/guest/projects/students

Ron</dc:description>

What's the Buzz about maemo?

 <dc:description>
There is a lot of talk about the Nokia Internet Tablet N810 and how it uses maemo (yes no uppercase letter here) which marketing calls a computer architecture platform and you and I would clumsily call the operating system’s SDK. So what is so cool about this new technology? Why does this have a coolness factor that blows the iPhone out of the water? Is it because it is open source? Well that isn’t that great an idea since you generally inhibits innovation and often more bureaucratic than closed systems. Is it the touch screen or User Interface, well it is sweet but it isn’t any really new. Is it the price, well it is fairly inexpensive but not dirt cheap. What is cool what makes this the sexiest innovation in years is that you can play with it.

I remember my first computer and the manual that came with it said “Open the case and make sure all the cards are fitted tightly.” The manufacture specifically pointed out that PC’s are meant to be something the user can modify, it isn’t a sealed system. I was expected to know how to change cards, add RAM, write basic programs, and customize the configuration. With newer devices all of this has gone to the wayside, but with the Linux based OS and open source I am again empowered with the ability to make this computer mine.

Valentines Day a day made for Mobile Devices

 <dc:description>
Mobile devices are red hot today! This is the one day where you have to call your loved one at least three times but you need to do so much more! You need to make reservations at a nice restaurant. You probably should use your browser capabilities to check what’s on at the movies or theatres as well as check the location of that nice restaurant. Of course you’ll want to use the location based services to download those sites to your phone so you can arrive on time. You need to capture a mobile-movie at work then send a multi-media message saying how much you miss that significant one. I like to put my files and papers laid out in a heart shape encircling “her” picture. Any relationship, from one day to fifty years needs to pass the Valentines Day test.

Now it is easier to make that significant relationship, by using your mobile device. While computer dating has been around for years, mobile dating is an ever increasing market. There are several mobile dating services with the large operators offering their own services. In Matt Hamblen’s article “Finding love on the cell phone”, he points out that analysts at Frost & Sullivan put the revenues for global mobile dating services at $31 million in 2005, a number that is expected to grow to $215 million in 2009. Mobile dating offers a lot of advantages over computer dating. It allows you to share experiences in real time, if you see something while at lunch you can just snap a photo and share it. You can call or text at anytime including during breaks at work instead of just in the evening. With the increase in mobile broadband, faster text services and the ability to text or call mobile phones are the ultimate pre-dating service.
