XMPP Feeds vs RSS

with all the twittering going on and the million of requests that are happening which twitter is barely keeping their nose above water on, it's no wonder that the web is changing again...it looks like XMPP feeds (you might know it as jabber instant message protocol but XMPP is the real name for it): pushing information instead of sending millions of requests every 5 seconds will be the next evolution in technology on the web. XMPP will save a lot of server power and unneccessary traffic on the web. many new entreprenures are testing out this new technology which is in it's very early stages. for me, at 360fashion.net, i think it sounds like the next wave! being pushy might just have a new spin on it in the very near future. check out what this guy has to say about it since lifetype cant embed the video in the page. Instant messaging is just one of the features that this protocol can do, but used in the twitter way, it can really save on a lot of traffic. Have you ever been twittering and you see suddenly 5 posts pop up at the same time? That's cuz that is how many times they are pulling the information. Wasteful. If twitter were XMPP based, you would get the post when the post was made because it would be pushing it to you. XMPP pushes the data out as it happens.

LeWeb08

LeWeb08, sponsored in part by Nokia, was a total success. The greatest thing about the event was that you could walk up to anyone, see their namecard, and feel free to talk with them about who they are and what they do. The party afterwards was really fun, cuz who ever goes to a nightclub and can talk and smile to everyone in the entire place. Where else is there so much transparancy, that even Michael Arrington can discuss openly on stage his discomfort and have Loic be able to respond to the crowd directly about any problems. There was a real togetherness feeling, and many of the people you have heard about one could just approach and start talking to. I walked in at the same time and saw Hugh and Doc Searls.

I got to sit with him and talk together during the whole first day! It was really enlightening to hear his perspective whispered in my ear. One got to catch up with the original crowd, and meet totally new entreprenures with unique business models. Marc Canter launched a new book! I cant wait to buy it. It had a lot of digital archetecture. I wonder how his platform, people aggregator, ranks against ovi. There are some extra features such as the blog rss import that are really cool. I would have chosen this platform for the forum.nokia.com blogs. There was a lot of talk about mobile, mobile love, mobile only social networks, mobile applications, mobile web. I thought that leweb08 too could have benefitted from the mobile calendar software and leiki solution.

I got to demo my Anina Dress Up application at LeWeb08 to everyone and found many collaboration partners!

There was a different feeling at LeWeb08 than at the Nokia World. I found it quite hard to interact with the green badge people at the event. First they separated the press from the rest, where as last year's amsterdam venue allowed reporters to move easily back and forth between the press interview areas and the presentations. It was a different vibe too becase without the calendar and leiki solutions, you didnt know who anyone was, you could not match make with the matchmaker. i was looking for people interested in partnering on games, and i didnt meet anyone who was there. i didnt either know about any nokia champion event, or nokia pro members have the chance to meet. would have been grate to have a meet and greet the nokia pro members area. The party too in amsterdam in 07 was so great--beach volly ball! Another great thing about the Nokia World was the food was excellent, and the exhibition area well laid out and easy to get friendly demos, support, contacts.

LeWeb08 too is more interactive--many people can ask many questions and even talk with the speakers one on one afterwards in the press room. I got a great interview with marissa mayer from google about fashion which was very exciting! Stay tuned on 360fashion to hear how important fashion is in search technology!

Many of the press that had been present at Nokia World were at LeWeb08! It was cool to get their perspectives between the two conferences and discuss about technologies we had seen at both.

I missed Chris Andersen from WIRED MAGAZINE, he was awesome at Nokia World! I wish they would have brought him back to speak again. The gilmore gang on stage at LeWeb08 was really fantastic, but no women I have to report made it into the group. I wonder why Nokia World doesnt have pannels where the press can interview and hear the reactions together from the different departments. I think definitly David Weingerger should speak at Nokia World! He would really be enlightening to the green badge people. The super guest at LeWeb08 was Paolo Cohelo. He talked about how plagerizing his work into digital copies has not hert his business, but rather increased his sales of hard copy books in the country where the copy was made. He said he even dedicated a whole page on his site to link to the copies. His publisher called him up and didnt know what to do about it. You can watch the web stream here: Paolo Cohelo. Marissa Mayer was present and talked about Google Chrome and how they worked with big fashion designers to choose skins for iGoogle.

The venue of LeWeb was really impressive. I liked the open space, the levels, and the cheese platter and deserts were pleanty! I would have loved more salad in a bigger cup :D same at Nokia World. The salad at LeWeb08 was great dressing.

The Nokia Speech at on Love, was really entertaining, but too big to upload to ovi.com. I asked if there were any plans for OVI to white label their software, now that Nokia is a software company and not a handset manufacturer. He answered that first they were working on the platform.

Le Web also had problems with the wifi, as the same in the big hall at Nokia. Many bloggers and people were very upset about this at LeWeb08--but if Nokia can't do it, what makes anyone think that that Swisscom can do it? My friend at Nokia World told me that it's always like that at events, everyone gets on the web, then it slows down and doesn't work, then some people drop off, and the die hards get on. I was with Robert Scoble at Nokia World, and he and I could not really get on the web there either until later in the day or in the press lounge. If Swisscom in leweb08, France Telecom in leweb07, and at Nokia World too can't figure out the best solution, then I say, it's up to the bloggers and web users to be descrete and not hog up the lines with uploading huge videos, or checking email, or just hanging out on the line. Get up, do what you have to do, and then close down and let someone else online. Maybe we need some time slot software like when you go to the genious bar at apple, you can register for your timeslots when you want to blog :D. that would never work we know because human beings are selfish by nature. They love to be connected.

For some reason, my 360fashion video embed code does not show up in this post, nor the javascript version, so if you want to watch the marissa mayer interview it's here. Also the fotonauts javascript seems not to be working in this lifetype blog software but you can watch the photos here.

Mostly, it was the atmosphere at LeWeb08, that really won out for me--one could really walk up to ANYONE at the venue and start talking. This was the most profound feeling and best part of the event. Nokia really did a great job in connecting people by sponsoring this event.

I asked the question at LeWeb08 to Google CEO, about Google TO DO list request was considered "off topic" until my psycic manifestation powers
moved in and Google announced to do lists on Google Labs 5 minutes
after I asked the CEO who thought the question was trivial and he would take it into consideration. I was
thinking of that in the OVI services, there's a task list manager, so
it
is strange that there's no task list manager in the suite of google collaboration sofware. I map my domain over gmail for professional reasons in business, and a to do list would be very welcome. Ovi's advantage is that it is integrated in their product offering, and synches with the phone, however, i cannot use ovi for business purposes as it would not come with my domain as in the gmail masking.

If you are wondering about these crazy photos, I was given the task of destroying a "indistructable phone".

In the end I managed. Nothing can withstand MODELPOWER.

Nokia World 2008 Barcelona Spain

OVI SYNCH

I really think that ovi has a chance to help a lot of people. Currently I use plaxo.com to synchonise my contacts, but it only works with windows mobile and the other way is using the mobile service. I just signed up to ovi contact syncronisation and tried it out on my phone. It was really convenient and got my information into my calendar online, to do notes, and notes. The service is really well laid out on the screen, and if i did not use gmail documents and calendar so much, I would definitly switch to using ovi all the time. If ovi would make it possible to import my gmail calendar and contacts I would definitly switch between using it and gmail. I realize that ovi have ovi mail, and if i did not map my domain over my gmail, again, I would seriously consider switching.

I think that the trust factor will be really important for Nokia to establish, becuase I'm not sure how many people have built up enough trust with Nokia to syncronise their phone contacts. I would consider to do it because it would make my life easier and I could get away from plaxo and their terrible service social network that is mandatory. I wish Nokia would build some widgets like "import from plaxo" would be amazing. Then I could get off that system. The advantage of plaxo is that you can sync your computers too, not just your mobile device.

The clear advantage of using ovi is the one stop shopping experience, the seamlessness, the syncronisity--the interoperability. The send settings to your phone and upload from your synch. This is truely outstanding service and clearly easy to use. I love how you can even use it if you have a wifi device because as we know, there are not a lot of pre-paid mobile phone cards that can do internet.

Nokia have been forging ahead with creating widgets in the new N97 for facebook, google search, and more...will they do the same for ovi? If Nokia can let me get my data in and get my data out (sync in from google--sync out from ovi to google) then I will not hesitate to move totally to ovi system. So long as it's a one way street--only in no out, I dont know if i want to invest in a closed platform where I can not get my data out. At least on google I can get the data in, I can export it to other formats, I can import data, I can export my data...it's an open platform. Of course it doesnt work with my nokia phone very well and that is a big disadvantage that can be worked around with services such as goosync. Still it would be so nice if your informataion could become liquid and then you could choose the best system for staying up to date: ovi for sure is in the top contenders for great services.

Some of the most exciting things about this year's Nokia World was how the press got to have access to key leaders to talk directly to them one-on-one.

Many of the journalists really appreciated this opportunity. Robert Scoble really gave super advice, mused with them on strategy, and video'd the heck out of everything using his flip cam!

I found it interesting to talk to the head of marketing and ask him how, now that Nokia is a software company, will they deal with China. Facebook & Google, are not at all popular in China. Nokia, being a leader in the China market for handsets, could have a tough time to bring the N97 to market due to Baidu's popularity and the new social networks that are exploding. I wonder if in China they will make a localized version with local social networks and Baidu search or if facebook and Google are their global partners and no localization will be possible. Perhaps it is the strategy of facebook and Google to leverage Nokia to increase their userbase in China.

It was very generous of Anssi Vanjoki was very kind to take my questions about the battery life of the N97 and how many women were consulted on the design of it. I commented about solar power battery backs, however Mr. Vanjoki pointed out the obvious which was that one cell on the back of a battery pack will not solve your power problems (because direct sunlight is needed in constant to charge). He said that the N97's design team is 50-50 men and women.

Again the lovely Darla Mack backed me up in my campaign for fashion phones becoming S60 phones so as to target digital girls such as we are. 2 Years ago at the Nokia World, the design head stated that they understood that women were really into multimedia and that Nokia would respond to this female demand (and he said specifically that it meant not making the phones pink). Both Darla and I would love to see more visually stimulating phones such as the fashion phones, but we need the power of NSeries inside!

Seeing Robert Scoble, and listening to his point of view on the N97 was really interesting. He suggested to Nokia that they should do a fully branded facebook phone. However, I think that would not be in line with Nokia's brand strategy. Other phone manufacturers have done that type of thing (Moto Dolce & Gabana gold razer) and been successful so I can understand Robert's point of view. However, Nokia have never been the ones to partner with only one brand. The N97's appeal is it's host of services in one touch screen device.

Robert took a lot of great photos on his flickr and wrote an interesting breakdown on his blog. The interface of the N97 is what I find very interesting. The killer feature for me, and the advancement in UI design is the IMPORTANT PEOPLE photos (4 on the screen). What is revolutionary about these 4 photo icons is that you can put your 4 most important contacts on your screen. When you click on their faces, the screen changes to show you all the sms messages, emails, and other communication information that you have had with this person. Many times I use multi-communication to talk with someone. Example: I have just responded to an important email to person X, and then I text person X to tell them that I have answered their email and to have a look at it now and reply to me. Many times they either respond by sms to say they answered, give me a short answer or immediate feedback answer, and then elaborate on it or give more details in the email. I find this point that the UI can make it possible for me to have all this conversation on one page really unique and revolutionary. I have not heard anyone else really focus on this feature, and for me, it's the top advantage.

Nokia World 2008 Barcelona, Spain

Nokia world starts off with a big green carpet bang! All the top are here and everyone is talking about the N97, slide screen, every detail such as the orange around the camera protective lense, the touch screen, the hinge everyone is talking about. This is really the season for talking about mobile mapping, advertising, green eco moves by the company globally, new improvements in mobile email and messaging, my top model friend renata came with me to the private dinner with nokia france (that was so cool to finally have a model friend come into this techy world), lost luggage by vueling, relentless tracking of it by the beautiful art hotel with an amazing view. I had a great day with the lovely and intelligent, Darla Mack, and bugged a lot of people about women and mobile...:D I'm meeting a lot of great new people and the wifi is holding up. The press one on one's with the top people in the company is really interesting. I was with the social media group for some meetings and will post the videos tomorrow. I got to talk to the nokia share guy about why sixapart states on it's website that it's compatible with share--and it doesn't work--plus in v3 of share it's not possible to imput your own servers like in v2. hopefully he will find out why they took it out and get it put back in :)

everyone is talking about the hinge on the N97. everyone is talking about the touch screen. it's a slim phone and comes in white and black. every curve on it's shape has a reason and a rhyme for being there such as the raised area on the back cover so that you can grip it easily for taking photos in your right hand. the carl zeis lense got a cover back on it after the N96. this phone is the phone that conjurs up the image of a 30 something startup exec sitting at a table in the morning with his coffe and a briosch reading this feeds for the day and getting his news from the curved up hinged design. they say it's a blogger, multimedia phone, but it seems to be more ready to let you read information or watch internet videos, yet it has a 5 mega pixel camera and facebook, ovi, maps, email, feeds, widgets, inside it's touch vga screen.

off to the nokia party -- and i'm late!

ps. the backchannels and the twittering is cool. what i miss right now is the great LEIKI software of the past that helped me meet and make appointments during the event. this time around i'm just meeting people by chance. with the LEIKI software is was really great to figure out who to meet of the participants, and the mobile calendar application where you could plan your sessions was fantastic. no one on the twitter or the chat channel could tell me if nokia world had a mobile website this year. it seems that they are all used to getting the regular web on their mini computers. even if wap site days are over, the calendar was really helpful, with the possibility to build your own personalized schedule at the event and the LEIKI intelligent networking tool was truely missed. lets see whom else i will meet at this event!

some videos I uploaded to ovi:
