Lucian Tomuta's Forum Nokia Blog

Don't expect miracles here, don't expect solutions to world's problems. It is more likely that I will ask [myself] questions looking for a always elusive answer.
And of course: "All opinions expressed in this blog are the author's own and do not necessarily represent the official view of Nokia". I mean it!

Nokia N97 SDK v1.0 released

Those engaged in developing applications for Nokia N97 will be interested to know that the final version of the Nokia N97 SDK has been released today.

The new SDK version provides:

Improved support of home screen features.

Updated SDK documentation.

Support for the Chinese version of the full keyboard.

Updated example applications.

Updated default emulator theme.

Fixes for all other important bugs.

Read more about features and known issues in SDK's release notes.

It is probably worth making clear a few points about this SDK:

Nokia N97 is and S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) device and it is fully compatible that that platform release. Any application developed for S60 5th Edition devices using the S60 5th Edition (Symbian^1) SDK will be compatible with smartphone as well.

The Nokia N97 SDK is only provided as an alternative, mostly beneficial to those developing applications targeting N97's specific features, features not supported by the platform release and thus not supported by other devices based on it, as for example the home screen widgets.

While the APIs in the S60 5th Edition SDK are covered by platform's binary compatibility promise, all the additional device specific APIs provided by the Nokia N97 SDKs are provided "as is", without binary compatibility promise.

That's it. Enjoy the new release and don't forget to let us know what you think about it.

S60 3rd Edition FP2 SDK released

No media hype, no cool videos and no amassing press releases. Not yet anyway :) But yes, the S60 3rd Edition SDK, supporting Feature Pack 2 (aka S60 3.2 SDK) is out and waiting for you to download it.

A set of webinar sessions will probably follow and presentations in developer events but, for now, here's a brief list of what this SDK brings to the table.

First, it is a hybrid SDK so while the size of the download package is some 20% increased you get:

S60 Symbian C++

S60 Java

Open C

Web Runtime

So, four SDKs for the price of one. Sweet! But you'll have to remember to use the Custom install option if you do not want to install everything on your system. ;)

Speaking of install you will most likely notice the change of the default install location (C:\S60\Devices) and a new directory structure (e.g. \S60CppExamples replaces the familiar \S60Ex). All the rest pretty much standard but of course you will have to read the install guide just to make sure that you are not doing some install time mistake.

Below you will find a "mind map" with some of the changes in the S60 Platform. More information can be found of course in the release notes and in the comprehensive (and slightly improved) SDK documentation.

One tip about the SDK documentation: a mix of C++ and Java results for a search is probably not what you'll find most useful. The solution comes from the Eclipse Help Viewer, as it allows you to define search scope filters, so you can limit the search to C++ topics only.

Ok, this is the news. I hope you will enjoy this SDK release and I wish you happy coding … as soon as the first phones supporting this SDK are available.
