Do you find Forum Nokia Wiki articles helpful? Are you amongst the people who finally feel relieved after seeing a code snippet in the Forum Nokia Wiki? or a person who keeps wondering about a programming issue, which at last you find filed in the Forum Nokia Wiki Knowledge Base?

Certainly, Forum Nokia Wiki has been an invaluable resource and it looks like the information available will grow more and more. Almost all of us, developing on Nokia mobile platforms, use the Wiki consistently. Did you ever think of writing a comment/review of the article, if the solution presented in the article worked for you? Such comments/reviews are really helpful to the developers who might refer to the article at a later stage.

Well, for the month of September, you can win an N97 multimedia device by giving your approval (submitting reviews) to one or more Wiki articles.

Review an Article Contest

The purpose of this competition is to provide additional feedback pointing out high quality articles that are tested by the community.

Participate in the Review an Article Contest by submitting your reviews (in the form of comments) to the article/articles (other than yours) that have been helpful to you or that interest you. If the article is of high quality edit it by putting the template ReviewerApproved within double curly braces as the first line in the article. Place the code before anything else on the page like this:

Anyone that creates a review has a chance to win. One device will be awarded randomly to someone that positively rates an article with review comments. Of course those with the most quality reviews will be the winners but everyone has a chance to win. At least five N97's are to be awarded for this contest.

Let's talk about the Wiki!

Happy New year to all!

On the onset of the new year, lets talk about the Forum Nokia Wiki. In learning to develop for S60, Forum Nokia Wiki has been an invaluable resource and it looks like the information available will grow more and more. From the birth of the Wiki till date, many mobile developers including FN members, FN Champions and experts have shared their knowledge and expertise with their aricles and many people work behind the scenes to organize them. Forum Nokia Wiki currently has 5889 articles. I, on behalf of Wiki Admin team, extend our deepest appreciation and thank all those who have helped in making the Forum Nokia Wiki a better community resource.

Here, I would particularly want to highlight an element of the Wiki which has emerged in the middle of the last year. In mid July 2008, we had introduced in the Wiki, a section for Featured articles. Since then each week, a deserving article is chosen as the Featured Article of the Week and is featured on the home page. Featured articles are considered to be good quality articles in the Forum Nokia Wiki, as determined by the Forum Nokia Wiki administrators. Before being listed here, these articles are reviewed for accuracy, neutrality, completeness, and style. Featured articles are indicated by a small tick in the top right corner of the article. All the articles that are selected as featured articles can be found here. This week we reached our 25th Featured article.

Forum Nokia also continues to honour one member every month for their outstanding contribution to our community’s Wiki. The contributor of the month is awarded a new S60 device. The honor is given to people that have contributed outstanding work for the month in number of articles and quality of the articles. You too can be a Contributor of the Month by simply contributing useful articles, example codes or white papers. Over and above, Forum Nokia Wiki also organizes special contest at regular intervals and rewards the winners. 2008 witnessed four such competetions including 2008 Code Example Challenge, The Asian Wiki Quest for Students, 2008 Widgets Contributions Contest and S60 5th Edition UI Contribution Contest.

Thus, it has been a great progressive year and Forum Nokia Wiki continues to become more versatile resource. And if you develop or are interested in developing for S60 or mobile platforms in general, check it out and feel free to contribute useful articles.

PyS60 Talks #2 : PyS60 Extensions

Its time for PyS60 Talks #2 !

Schedule for PyS60 Talks #2 :

Date : 18 August 2008 (Monday )

Time : 13:30 GMT to 15:30 GMT

Agenda / Discussion Topic : PyS60 Extensions

PyS60 Talks #2 would cover discussions on PyS60 Extensions : Using and creating extensions, for 2nd and 3rd edition devices. The talks would also cover discussions on : Feature requests that can be implemented by writing Pys60 Extensions in C++.

This time also the duration of the talks has been kept 2 hours, from 13:30 GMT to 15:30 GMT. Thus more people would be able to attend it.

How to join the Pys60 Talks :

Write #pys60talks as the channel
Pick a nickname for yourself (this has to be unique, so try to come up with something more original than “Henry” or "John")
Click connect.

PyS60 Talks #1 : Conclusion

We had the first session of PyS60 Talks yesterday.

The Agenda for PyS60 Talks #1 was Sis files and Signing Issues !

And I have to say we had quite a decent audience to participate in the talks. We had a good handful of FN Champions and experts attend this talks in addition to the enthusastic PyS60 developers and some end users also.

We had some Golden, Silver, Copper and sometimes even a Dimond Question flying in the Talks

(The participants would know more about those kind of questions)

The discussions in the talks mainly pertained to Signing Issues and I hope the new developers can say they know the following:

What is Signing ?
Why is Signing necessary?
How to Sign applications?
What is the difference between Self Signed and Open Signed Beta ?
What is the Importance of Platform Securiy ?
Easy Way to get your applications open signed - using opensigned.py by yak
Discussions on Ensymble
How was free dev cert system abused ?

Now for the surprise :

We decided to give away a prize to a lucky participant of the talks. Now you know why we needed your email addresses.

Good news for all Pys60 Enthusiastics. I hereby announce the launch of http://www.croozeus.com - "Home To Pys60 Developers !"

"This project is a joint venture by Pankaj Nathani and Bogdan Galiceanu"

We have tried to integrate everything about Python for S60 on croozeus.com ! Many of you might have known about my tutorials on Pys60 at my Home Page - http://croozeus.googlepages.com/py60 ; here we have just tried to make it more better for the new developers as well as advanced developers. The tutorials are freshly prepared and in a more organized manner to learn Pys60 with ease ! The tutorials are simple, extensive and contain code snippets of almost all the modules as well as some third party extensions that may be required for addition features.

Moreover we have also introduced some new concepts like "Pys60 Talks" and "Pys60 Applications". These added sections will only allow the developers to widen their knowledge about Python for S60.

Pys60 Applications is a section where every ten days, we feature one standalone application in Python for S60 (with source code), so that other developers may learn from these !

Will iPhone Launch in India, affect Nokia ?

iPhone is going to be launched in India soon !

Will this be a threat to Nokia's dominace in India ?

Here is what Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, global president and CEO of Nokia has to say about this.

"When iPhone comes to India, it adds to our competitors here. The entry of a new product in the market creates customer interest and it, therefore, impacts us in India"

According to Kallasvuo, Nokia would continue to focus on its branding, distribution, logistics, services and support to fend off competition from iPhone.

"In India we have to scale to manage all our operations in totality. This is an advantage we have over our competitors," he said, when asked on the company's strategy to counter the cheap handsets that are increasingly being offered by Chinese players in India.

Nokia - a City

As summer holidays approach people tend to take a break, so here is non-technical post on my behalf !

Before quoting anything, I would like to ask a question,

How many of you knew "Nokia" as a city?

I don't know how many of you knew it.

Atleast, I was not aware about this fact. People in Finland would know about this all right.

Today I just came across an interesting article in The Times Of India, one of the leading newspapers in India, which described that Nokia is a city in (SOUTH-WEST FINLAND) !

It Quotes

"Even though nearly two billion people around the world rely on and recognise the brand because they own the mobile, few know its story began in a town called Nokia."

Puppy Robot

Yesterday, I had been to the Nokia house, Espoo to attend the Nokia Innovation Expo 2008 where all MobileRules Technology Innovation Competetion 2008 Finalists gathered to present their innovations.

We had a Chance to visit the Nokia Lounge at the Nokia HeadQuarters, where we saw some great work that Nokia has been doing currently on Mobile phones, Also it was great to be surrounded by phones, phones and phones everytime in the Nokia Lobby (didn't feel like leaving that place :-) )

Here is a thing that I liked the most in the Nokia Lounge, an Nokia Tablet controlling a Puppy Robot, which responded really very well !

Python on E90 !

Hello All,

Many of you might be knowing me from the Forum Nokia Discussion boards (If not do look for my screen name - Croozeus , in the Python Forums particularty) . Since I started blogging here some months ago, you could read my previous blogs there.

Well this is my 1st Blog entry and undoubtly I want to start it with PyS60

Last week I received an E90 from Forum Nokia as my Champions device (Thank You) I started working some things on Python on my new device.

I installed Python and the shell after getting it signed through open signed online (Pity I don't have a Dev Cert for my new device) I worked out few basic scripts to see how the device responed. Again Pity the E90 doesnt have an acceleromenter ! I ran some of my scripts on the device. However when I tried to install my application SwapProfile or any other application ,there I faced an error i had never seen when installing applications to any device "Cannot Install, Constrained by the certificate" and I was like, man, I have signed this through open signed and how come this error. I signed the application again and tried to install this but same error again.

Then I reassembled and made the SIS file again and this time I struct what the problem was. This time I made the installation file using ensymble's selfsigned certificate, then signed the file using opensigned online and then installed. It installs perfectly but still I faced a BIG problem. The installed application doesn't run in any case. I cross checked with other people using the same device. My fellow champion friend Bogdan faced the same problems when installing any opensigned applications on the E90. Because of this we haven't been able to run any installed (opensigned) application. We can'nt still figure out what the problem was, I would like to see comments and opinions of other pys60 developers who might have have faced this problem or might know the reason for this.
