<dc:description>
Last month, Forum Nokia Wiki organized a contest for reviewers - Review an Article contest! The purpose of this competition was to provide additional feedback pointing out high quality articles that are tested by the community. The contest was well received by the developer community and we got more than 1200 articles reviewed during this contest.

As for the winners, one winner is selected randomly (as promised), giving everyone who participated a fair chance to win. FireSwarog was randomly selected as the lucky winner.

Other than the lucky winner, 4 other winners + 2 Forum Nokia Champions (who were judged separately) are awarded for their submission of high quality reviews. The reviews were read and reread by the judges before picking up the winners.

Larry101

Nirpsis

Kamalakshan

Deepikagohil

Savaj - FNC

Gaba88 - FNC.

Hearty congratulations to all the winners and participants for their efforts.

To meet the ever increasing enthusiasm of Wiki contributors, we have a new contest for the month of October - Forum Nokia's contest for Mobile Web Templates.

This Wiki competition offers Web developers the opportunity to show off their creativity and technical skills using Nokia's Mobile Web Templates. Entries need to show how to develop better projects using these templates, and authors should document how they used the templates and changed them for their needs, including information such as stylistic changes, dynamic content, and database connection adaptations. The articles can be in the context of Mobile Web Sites or Web Runtime (WRT) using the Nokia Mobile Web Templates.

Read the instructions here and complete rules of participation here.

</dc:description>

Forum Nokia Wiki Review an Article Contest

 <dc:description>

Do you find Forum Nokia Wiki articles helpful? Are you amongst the people who finally feel relieved after seeing a code snippet in the Forum Nokia Wiki? or a person who keeps wondering about a programming issue, which at last you find filed in the Forum Nokia Wiki Knowledge Base?

Certainly, Forum Nokia Wiki has been an invaluable resource and it
looks like the information available will grow more and more. Almost all of us, developing on Nokia mobile platforms, use the Wiki consistently. Did you ever think of writing a comment/review of the article, if the solution presented in the article worked for you? Such comments/reviews are really helpful to the developers who might refer to the article at a later stage.

Well, for the month of September, you can win an N97 multimedia device by giving your approval (submitting reviews) to one or more Wiki articles.

Review an Article Contest

The purpose of this competition is to provide additional feedback
pointing out high quality articles that are tested by the community.

Participate in the Review an Article Contest by submitting your reviews (in the form of comments) to the article/articles (other than yours) that have been helpful to you or that interest you. If the article is of high quality edit it by putting the template ReviewerApproved within double curly braces as the first line in the article. Place the code before anything else on the page like this:

{{ReviewerApproved}}

Find more details on the Wiki Reviewer details page.

Anyone that creates a review has a chance to win. One device
will be awarded randomly to someone that positively rates an article
with review comments. Of course those with the most quality reviews
will be the winners but everyone has a chance to win. At least five
N97's are to be awarded for this contest.

The contest start 00:01 September
1st, 2009 until 11:59 September 30th, 2009.

Read the complete rules of participation here. Read wiki reviewer instructions here.

 <dc:description>

We (me and my fellow champion Bogdan Galiceanu) are working with the guys at Symbian Foundation to come up with a new book for Python enthusiastics. We already have great PyS60 community and it can only get better

I hereby take the oppurtunity of inviting folks interested in PyS60 to get involved with the
development of this book.

As of now, we have a table of contents on the Symbian Wiki. You can contribute to the development of this wiki book by,

Suggesting changes to the contents of the book

Writing one or more of the sections they propose

Reviewing sections of the book as it takes shape.

Once the Wiki book is ready in good shape, we would submit it as a manuscript for copy editing and typeset. The book would then be released as an eBook (like the Demand Paging title). The wiki copy
will live on so that updates can be made and transferred into the eBook
regularly.

If you are interested to contribute or review some
topics (or just give some feedback), drop me an email at pankaj.nathani(AT)croozeus.com - please do
mention the topics that you are interested in and what content you wish
to contribute. Writing will commence very shortly!

For more information and updates on Symbian’s books, read the post on the Symbian Blog by Satu McNabb, editor in the Symbian Technical Communications team.

PyS60 1.9.4 is now here!

 <dc:description>

As predicted here, PyS60 team releases one more PyS60 dot release in the series of 1.9.x releases.

Some additions as below, and as said earlier, baby steps are always good.

New features with PyS60 1.9.4

A single Nokia signed runtime package which can be installed on all S60 3rd ED and above devices is available.(size with dependencies=2.8MB, actual size if runtime ~1MB)

Improved Application Packager: The PyS60 application packager now scans the Python application being packaged and picks up the missing Python modules on which the application is dependent and packages them along with the application files.

Easier runtime deployment: Python runtime and its dependent components can be installed by just running any Python application packaged using 1.9.4 application packager. (Only available from S60 3rd edition FP2 devices onwards with latest firmware)

Two new APIs added to the socket module - access_points() and set_default_access_point() which have similar functionality to the APIs present in btsocket module.

Two new APIs added to e32 module - get_capabilities() and has_capabilities(). The former can be used to get the capabilities, the application has been signed with, and the latter to check if a given list of capabilities is granted to the application or not.

New mode to appuifw.app.screen - 'full_max' which can be used to achieve fullscreen on devices that don't have Left Soft Key and Right Soft Key(e.g.: Nokia 5800).

May be few more dot releases should lead to a final product - PyS60 2.0 - pretty soon!

You can download the release from maemo garage
garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=854

Last month, the Forum Nokia Wiki organised a Edit and Win Wiki Contest.

As the name suggests, the competetion had a prime focus on editing articles and we did get a very good response from the contributors, all over the world. All articles edited during the time period of the competetion were subjectively judged
on how well they are edited, what additional content is provided and the
number of Edits during the period of competetion.

It is great pleasure to announce the four winners of the Edit and Win Wiki Contest.
The first overall winner is Savaj with his many useful and insightful edits on the Wiki. First runner-up overall was Mind freak
who seemed to have spent all his free time polishing up articles. Since
we felt it was not fair to have Forum Nokia champions competing against
the general contributor, Kamaljaiswal, was selected as a winner among Forum Nokia champions. Dougcn edited many articles this month through translations and he was the fourth winner of the editing contest.

Forum Nokia Wiki Administration thanks all those who participated in the competetion.

Apart from the contest, Marcelobarrosalmeida ‎ who has contributed several extremely useful Python articles was selected as the Contributor of the Month for March 2009.

I hope you all join me in congratulating these winners.

Finally, PyS60 1.9.3 - now updated to Python core 2.5.4, one of the dot releases in the 1.9.x series has been announced less than an hour ago!

Here is the list of improvements and what a list!

Good news, the newer version now supports touch interfaces on the appuifw Canvas. An API has been added to the existing appuifw and the function - touch_enabled() is used for checking if the device supports touch input.

Also a sample application - scribble - is provided with the installation.

New module - sciptext makes PyS60 more poweful enabling/extending use of services like Application Manager, Calendar, Contacts,
	Landmarks, Location, Logging, Messaging, Media Management, Sensors and
	Sys Info.

Easier installation - now only one file needs to be installed - PyS60 Script Shell (available from S60 3rd FP2 onwards).This should support all ensymble packaged applications in future releases.

Enabled SSL support for socket.

I believe that the above concrete list of enhancement in the PyS60 version is a Big leap forward towards 2.0

Long live PyS60!

Forum Nokia Developer Conference 09, INDIA - Infinite Possibilities

The stadium is jam packed....BANG!

and what an event!

Today I had a chance to attend this event at the software capital of India, Bangalore. The event was held at Taj Residency in the heart of the city (very good location, great arrangements). The event witnessed overwhelming response by a good number of developing companies, individual developers, operator leaders, Nokia and Symbian leaders. The crowd seemed to go above 400 in number. The first such event in India, focussed on the developer community and development oppurtunities. However, it also covered a variety of interesting keynotes from ellite speakers, amongst which were Mobile value added services (MVAS), Location based services (LBS), Mobile widgets, emerging markets, trends in mobile OS development, smartphone evolution, etc. Not to forget Technology Showcase where successful developers presented their applications and future roadmaps.

The Forum Nokia team organising the event showed high hospitability towards the participants. The technical guys, Balagopal NKnair and Nitin Srivastava, were
busy discussing and sharing their technical expertise with the crowd. Shiraz Datta was also very friendly and discussed development oppurtunities with the participants.

It was quite a good time for me to network with some great people including some developers from other technologies and Forum Nokia Champions, whom I had never meet before. Special thanks to Mr. Prakash Sayini and Mr. Santosh Ostwal for sharing their personal career experiences and words of advice to students after the wind up. Last but not the least, the special memorable dinner with fellow Forum Nokia Champions and Forum Nokia Team before winding up. Also great thanks to Nicholas Foo, Technical leader for the Forum Nokia, APAC, for sharing the story of evolution of Forum Nokia with us at the dinner.

Like mentioned at the event, the presentations should be available at the event site soon.

Well done Forum Nokia... So where is the next one?

Cheers,

Let's talk about the Wiki!

 <dc:description>

Happy New year to all!

On the onset of the new year, lets talk about the Forum Nokia Wiki. In learning to develop for S60, Forum Nokia Wiki has been an invaluable resource and it looks like the information available will grow more and more. From the birth of the Wiki till date, many mobile developers including FN members, FN Champions and experts have shared their knowledge and expertise with their aricles and many people work behind the scenes to organize them. Forum Nokia Wiki currently has 5889 articles. I, on behalf of Wiki Admin team, extend our deepest appreciation and thank all those who have helped in making the Forum Nokia Wiki a better community resource.

Here, I would particularly want to highlight an element of the Wiki which has emerged in the middle of the last year. In mid July 2008, we had introduced in the Wiki, a section for Featured articles. Since then each week, a deserving article is chosen as the Featured Article of the Week and is featured on the home page. Featured articles are considered to be good quality articles in the Forum Nokia Wiki, as determined by the Forum Nokia Wiki administrators. Before being listed here, these articles are reviewed for accuracy, neutrality, completeness, and style. Featured articles are indicated by a small tick in the top right corner of the article. All the articles that are selected as featured articles can be found here. This week we reached our 25th Featured article.

Forum Nokia also continues to honour one member every month for their outstanding contribution to our community’s Wiki. The contributor of the month is awarded a new S60 device. The honor is given to people that have contributed outstanding work for the month in number of articles and quality of the articles. You too can be a Contributor of the Month by simply contributing useful articles, example codes or white papers. Over and above, Forum Nokia Wiki also organizes special contest at regular intervals and rewards the winners. 2008 witnessed four such competetions including 2008 Code Example Challenge, The Asian Wiki Quest for Students, 2008 Widgets Contributions Contest and S60 5th Edition UI Contribution Contest.

Thus, it has been a great progressive year and Forum Nokia Wiki continues to become more versatile resource. And if you develop or are interested in developing for S60 or mobile platforms in general, check it out and feel free to contribute useful articles.

See you at the Wiki !
