Java ME Developer Days - 6 weeks to go

Java Mobile and Embedded Developer Days is only 6 weeks away... The event will be again held in Santa Clara, on January 21st and 22nd.

The agenda is now fixed and it seems to contain a number of highly interesting talks and looks like one of my proposals was accepted as well (to provide the other end of the spectrum of presentation quality :-)

I know what slides I am working on over the xmas break...

Free Tira Wireless' device database

This is sort of old news, but I realized I have not written about this before... Tira Wirless has a free version of its modd mobile device database available on the net (there is also for-fee Standard and Enterprise Editions). The database covers quite a nice number of manufacturers and handsets (did not see any major player missing from there, that's for sure...)

You need to register to Tira Go Mobile Community to be able to access the database, which contains information about the devices as well as the Java implementations. The free version lists basic form factor information, Java API support and general Java VM stuff (JAR size, heap, RMS, performance index, etc.)

The for-fee standard edition adds many, many more bits of information: system properties, browser & WAP characteristics, protocol support, Java system event behavior, key codes and other detailed Java API information. It might be worthwhile for Java-developers to check this out...

Just got a notification by email that the JavaOne 2008 Call for Papers is open. The call for papers closes on November 16th. More information here.

Also remember to submit your proposals to Java Mobile and Embedded Developer Day. The call for proposals for this even closes on October 31st.

As mentioned before eSWT plug-in for S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 SDK is out. My esteemed colleague Jarmo Lahtinen has spent some time with that plug-in, basically creating a new version of his flie browser MIDlet.

The differences in the UIs are notable. Here is an example of the browser using LCDUI

And here is the same view with eSWT showing the whole folder structure. Quite nice, eh.

In case you have missed, eSWT plugin for S60 3rd Edition FP2 SDK is available. There are not yet any devices available to run your enhanced MIDlets, but you will be able to get started with more compelling UIs with this plug-in.

I feel kind of betraying the Flash Lite crowd by posting about a Java event while sitting at the Nokia booth at Adobe MAX...

Anyhow, I just noticed at Terrence Barr's blog that there will be a mobile Java developer days (well, Java Mobile and Embedded Developer Days) in Santa Clara, CA January 22-24, 2008, The call for papers started today (Oct 2nd) and the call will end on Oct 31st).

S60 3rd Edition FP2 MIDP SDK (beta) - some comments

As some of you might have noted, the beta version for the MIDP SDK for S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 has been available from Forum Nokia for a couple of weeks now. The SDK (and also platform in question) introduces the subset of MSA specification (JSR-248), which means that also MIDP 2.1 is supported (for the Nokia platform support of various APIs see this table).

The beta SDK works and has been tested with NetBeans or Eclipse with Eclipse ME. Note that Sun WTK is not supported (mainly as WTK does not support UEI - Unified Emulator Interface). The release notes contain also other valuable information so please be sure to read it.

And please note that this is beta release, so some things might not work as expected. But if you encounter something, please report it to us!

S60 Podcast - intro to Widsets

Found some extra time to listen to one of Phil's S60 podcasts (Podcast #28). The most recent one is an interview of Tommi Sihvola, one of the inventors of Widsets. (Quick summary: Widsets are mobile widgets that enable anyone to create, publish and share internet content to be accessed on their mobile phones. The Widsets on the phone are basically a Java application running the small widgets inside.)

In the interview, Tommi talks for example about how and why Widsets got started. It was interesting to hear that their first target phone was Motorola Razr... which basically forced to be really aware of the available resources (good thing in the long run!).
