Dr. Raento wins an award for best CS dissertation in 2007 in Finland

Unless I am totally mistaken, one of our Forum Nokia Champions, Mika Raento, has just won the award for the best doctoral thesis/dissertation in computer science for 2007 in Finland from the Finnish Information Processing Association (strictly speaking, I guess the award is granted by a research foundation, which is part of FIPA). His dissertation was titled "Exploring privacy for ubiquitous computing: Tools, methods and experiments".

Three Flash Lite webinars in Dec (at least!)

There are a number of interesting Flash Lite related webinars coming by Forum Nokia and Adobe. On Thursday, Dec 13th James Spanh from Cell Company is talking about "Generating Revenue with Flash Content and Services" (register). Then on Friday, December 14th Floris van de Klashorst from Nokia Advertisement Business has a presentation on Mobile Advertising (register). And finally on December 18th, Giorgio Natili will tell us about "Exploring the Flash Video Capabilities for Mobile" (register). Enjoy!

Mobile Python book is out

Jurgen Scheible (on the right) and Ville Tuulos holding the first autographed copy of their new book about Python on S60 devices. I quickly browsed the book and it looks very good and very useful book teaching how to use PyS60 to prototype mobile applications! Nice work guys!

FN Developer Day - Maps and Navigation API

This is the first time I am attending a Forum Nokia Developer Day (or Forum Nokia Champions Day) event, which really runs for two days for the name "Day" is a little misleading. This time the event is organized just before the Symbian Smartphone Show in London on Oct 16th and 17th. It looks like about 50 people are attending the event (or at least I was able to count that many people attending the first session on Sunday (yes, Sunday – some people are also working on Sundays!).

The first session by my esteemed colleagues Jure Sustersic and Lucian Tomuta was about the soon-to-be-released Map and Navigation Framework/API. Here are my short notes on the API (I’ll skip the coding details as my Symbian C++ knowledge is not strong enough to allow me to note any details without making huge mistakes…)

The API relies on (copyrighted) navigation data provided by third parties (like Navteq and TeleAtlas) and therefore the commercial application developers utilizing this API have to pay for a license – the license model is fixed fee per application activation. The license also prohibits you from developing a new fleet management application but an extension to an existing one is allowed. There is no license fee for non-commercial applications (like freeware).

What are then commercial applications? Basically any enterprise applications, or any applications getting revenue in some form or another. And the licenses can be bought in bulk – I think the licenses will be available in piles of 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000.

You can use this API on any S60 3rd Edition FP2 devices. In addition, you can run the same application on S60 3rd Edition and 3rd Edition FP1 devices, but an additional SIS file needs to be installed (that is basically the navigation provider application also known as Nokia Maps).

Mobile Java developer conference coming in January 2008

I feel kind of betraying the Flash Lite crowd by posting about a Java event while sitting at the Nokia booth at Adobe MAX...

Anyhow, I just noticed at Terrence Barr's blog that there will be a mobile Java developer days (well, Java Mobile and Embedded Developer Days) in Santa Clara, CA January 22-24, 2008, The call for papers started today (Oct 2nd) and the call will end on Oct 31st).

As Alessandro, Scott, and others have noted many times, Adobe MAX Chicago is just few days off. I'll be there starting late Sunday evening, so unfortunately I cannot make to the MaD get-together, but please swing by the Nokia booth and say hello. Bring also your notes about feedback to Nokia for our Flash Lite implementations - both positive and negative. I'll pass them on to the Flash Lite teams inside Nokia.

An evening with S60 - San Francisco

S60 evenings will continue on the West Coast. This time the party will be in San Francisco (almost my home town) around the time of CTIA (October 23rd to be exact), so register on the S60 site, plan your travels accordingly, and party!!!
