Nokia 5800 XpressMusic firmware v 30.0.011 includes Flash Lite 3.1

There is a new firmware for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, v 30.0.011 which includes Flash Lite 3.1.

Here the information from WURFL. The UA looks like this:

Nokia S60 5th Edition and new Flash Lite services

Today there was the announcement of the new Nokia S60 5th Edition platform and the support of new services using Flash Lite 3.0. You can read more on the pdf document, but here is the Flash Lite information:

“Developers of Flash Lite from Adobe applications benefit from the UI enhancements in S60 5th Edition, with more screen real estate and touch interaction enabling users to more easily and intuitively navigate Flash Lite content and applications. The on-screen keyboard also is available for text and data entry.
S60 5th Edition continues to support Flash Lite 3.0, with the addition of ActionScript extensions to take advantage of S60 Platform Services. These extensions provide access to:

The application manager.
Calendar records.
Contacts records.
Log information.
SMS and MMS messaging.
The media gallery.
Device location.
Landmarks.
System information.
Sensors.

These new APIs enable Flash Lite developers to access device-application data, such as that held in Calendar and Contacts, as well as information on a device’s location.
Together, the UI- and platform-access enhancements will enable Flash Lite developers to create a completely new breed of context-aware applications and services that provide users with information unique to their own experiences.”

Sounds super cool, no docs yet on specific API (if they exists). Waiting for more information!!

Nokia N81 firmware V20.0.056 adds Flash Lite 3 and Web RunTime

There is a new firmware for the Nokia N81, v20.0.056, which adds Flash Lite 3.0 and Web RunTime capabilities in addition to many other.

I will add these information to WURFL as soon as I can get the User Agent from somewhere!

Nokia E66 and Nokia E77 are Flash Lite 3 enabled

Forum Nokia has just posted the information about the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71. Both these phones are Flash Lite 3.0 enabled and support Flash Lite content as standalone, screensaver and browser. It means that you cna see YouTube videos in the S60 browser.

I will update the WURFL information as soon as possible and track Flash Lite related information on flashlite4nokia for the both E66 and E71.

Rich Mobile Web Applications using the Nokia N95 S60 browser and Flash Lite content

Here is a example of Flash Lite content embeddedin a mobile site. The banner is done in Flash Lite 1.1, while the Flickr loaded uses Flash Lite 2.0 and the SWX framework to load images from my Flickr account. I created this demo for the Adobe MAX 2007 conference in Chicago. Not many people know that you can view Flash Lite content using the S60 Browser.

The quality of the video isn't great, but you get the concept!

The idea is that creating Flash Lite content for a mobile site is possible, you will need to detect if the phone supports Flash Lite and which version and for this WURFL is the tool since now Flash Lite capabilities are included!!

Flash Lite 3 How To

Flash Lite 3 availability was announced at the Adobe MAX 2007 developer conference in Chicago this week.

The major capability of the new player is the ability to playback Flash Video as local file, progressive downloads and streaming via RTMP protocol. The Flash Video codecs are build into the player. It a great addition which need to be carefully analyzed.

The news got a lot of press because Flash Video is the de-facto standard for Video on the Web, look at YouTube! But the web is one thing and mobile is completely different.

Bill Perry demonstrated the new Flash Lite 3 capability on a live demo at his session. He was capturing live video in the room with a camcoder, encode the video with Adobe Encore, send the video stream to Akamai streaming service and accessing this stream on a Nokia N95 running Flash Lite 3 via Wifi. As he mention during the session, the tricky part is defining optimal encoding settings for the video stream. I think this is going to be the most challenging part. Something that the news seems to be completely ignoring. A white paper on this topic should be available in the next few weeks.

I saw a Flash Lite 3 demo requesting and playing YouTube videos over Wifi. The quality of the video was not the best but that's because were not optimized for playback on a mobile phone.

Here some Flash Lite 3 capabilities:

Support for Flash Video
Improved performance 25% to 30%
Flash Lite 3 improves the web browsing experience
MMI extension for UI design, APIs to create mobile phones UI, (probably available to OEM only)
External API for browser scripting, (interesting!!)
removed SVG-Tiny 1.1! (I am guessing was done to make space for the flash video codecs)

Here are the full set of capabilities. The developer version of the Flash Lite 3 player is available for download: Flash Lite 3 Developer Edition (only N95 owner can request the player at the current moment via IMEI lock). A developers version will be available for download in the coming weeks.

Also there updates to the Flash CS3 IDE to publish and test Flash Lite 3 content:

No words on which handsets will be shipped with the Flash Lite 3 player embedded but Nokia and NTTDoCoMo are the first companies to embrace the new version Flash Lite 3 player. So I am guessing is a matter of few months.

Soon I will post some video of a Flash Lite demo that I created.

WURFL integrates Flash Lite information

The WURFL project now integrates Flash Lite capabilities for Flash Lite enabled Nokia phones. Thanks to Luca Passani, who is one of the creators of WURFL, and Jonathan Arnold (Breakdesign), who created a patch for Flash Lite based on my XML list of Flash Lite capabilities of Nokia phones, FLUAProfile.

I think this is a great achievement for Flash Lite and will increase Flash Lite exposure as another mobile platform available to developers.

Creating and Testing Mobile Web Sites with Adobe Creative Suite 3

I wanted to point out a great post from Scott Janousek about creating mobile site using the Adobe CS3 software.

He posted many details on the process of creating a mobile site and the integration/testing avaible using Device Central.

I wanted also mention that many Nokia 3rd edition phone support Flash Lite 1.1 and 2.0 content in the browser.
