SBSv2

Hi Bjorn,

The new build system isn't quite ready for the general developer community yet. One major omisson is that there isn't yet any support for GCCE (it's coming soon though - I talked to one of the team working on it at the Symbian stand) so unless you have the ARM RVCT compiler you can't build for a real device and there's still no emulator support on Linux, so you'll have to wait until we have a qemu based simulator for that.

SBSv2 is currently only shipped to Symbian partners as part of the System Integration Toolkit (SITK), so I don't have any links. The basic idea though is that it uses existing MMP files etc. to generate a single top level makefile for any project and you can then build it with GNU make compatible make tools - including distributed ones such as PVMGmake.

It shouldn't be very long before we can all use it though - I'm personally really looking forward to getting a version of Carbide.c++ that runs on Linux along with a simulator and a new build system. Then I can do all my Symbian development without Windows! :-)

Mark

Budapest report

Hi Amit,

You can be sure I'll post something after my trip to Budapest - the day I'm most interested in is for Forum Nokia Champions only though, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to cover here in public.

I hope you get to make it to an event near you soon.

Hi Mark,

Great update and nice to see things turning better for smartphones developers.

I would be missing the Budapest event too :( and hope to catch on some similar updates from you :)

cheers,

You're welcome Paul. That was really only my personal highlights. I didn't even mention the DevFest (where I got to wear a trendy red t-shirt that said "Ask the experts?" on it and I also attended a couple of free training courses, one on device drivers and another on SMP).

I don't think it managed to attract as many developers as they would have liked but definitely more of a developer focus than in previous years.

Hopefully I'll get to meet you in person in Budapest next month.

Mark

Mark

Thanks for the round-up I couldnt attend this year as it clashed with a workshop I was already committed too so useful to have your thoughts. Sounds like it was a bit more varied than perhaps its been of late and likely to get more so as the foundation kicks in. Good luck with the book Ill have to check it out when i can.
